Urban design is arguably as old as human civilization itself. Although it hadn't been referred to as ""urban design"" per se, key urban design practices and technologies have been integral in the creation of human settlements and ancient metropolises that have continued to amaze present-day urban designers, archaeologists and the rest of humanity alike.
For instance, the thoughtful design of thoroughfares has been always essential to the economic life of cities. Getting from point A to point B in the geographic sense is more than just a question of having a roadworthy means of transport; more so, having efficiently designed road systems and mass transport is really what cuts the cake.
Holders of a Master in Urban Design do more than just transport systems, of course. Sewage and waste disposal, for another, are also problems that urban designers must face when planning a city. All these three aforementioned factors (i.e., transportation, sewage and waste disposal), among many other equally significant factors, must be designed with geographic considerations in mind. Things like elevation from the sea, climate conditions, risk of earthquake or landslide and more are perennial things that make city planning a unique affair for each city in question. Truly, a Master in Urban Design program is an interdisciplinary field which develops professionals that we cannot live without.
At present, urban designers play significant role in solving day-to-day problems of cities, big and small. Outside government, they are also actively employed in the private sector by land developers and construction companies for similar endeavors."

Cities and communities are the main venues of key challenges of modern times, which we have to understand and be able to solve by including citizens to enhance sustainable development and quality of life.
A smart city is a city that is based on the needs of its citizens and that uses advanced technologies to promote competitiveness, sustainable development and a better quality of life.
Due to the fact that the process of urbanization is going to intensify, the cities will have to face challenges of sustainable development at different levels: environmental, social and economic, especially in less developed countries where the urbanization level is much greater. It is essential to introduce integrative policy forms for a better quality of life of both urban and rural populations, and for a greater social inclusion....

The Master in Urban Design is a three (optional four) semester program, 36 credits, that provides students with a design experience investigating the guiding principles for building regions, cities, and communities. Guided by the imperatives of sustainability and resilience, the program conceptualizes cities as an extension of the ecological transect across the natural to human habitat, providing students with a range of experiences from rural to urban.
Program Director Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, recognized for her foundational role in the development of the movement called the New Urbanism, leads the program that invites students to explore design, policy and management tools for place-making as a vehicle for improving quality of life in a variety of urban settings. The impact of the built environment on health, retrofitting the suburban landscape, real estate development as community building, adaptation to climate change, and urban growth and revitalization, are topics prominent in course offerings and faculty research....

The first three years (part 1) are designed to build basic knowledge and skills in Design, Communications, Architectural History/Theory and Sustainable Technology. Each year culminates in a major integrated design project which draws these parallel threads together.
The final two years (part 2) offer more opportunities to choose a programme of study which suits your emerging interests as a maturing designer. At level 4 you will choose an integrated design project from a series of offered options, and also select a ‘design research’ theme which leads into final year unit studios. The 12 month MArch Architecture Design course focuses on the development and application of specialist architectural knowledge and advanced design techniques and technologies.
This course was originally established to respond to the increasing competition in the professional procurement of buildings and the growing demand for specialist knowledge and skills in the pursuit of architectural excellence. It offers the opportunity to concentrate on architectural or urban design, humanities, environmental design and technology to a high level of sophistication without the need to work within a single specialist area.
As part of its remit, the Department of Architecture and Built Environment will develop your vocational skills and the environmentally responsible attitude necessary in today's rapidly changing world.
The department enjoys strong collaborative links with overseas institutions.
This interdisciplinary programme shares modules with other postgraduate courses within the department.

We are experiencing an unprecedented moment of urban and demographic growth and cities are facing important social, economic and cultural issues. We have before us the challenge of giving shape to spaces that respond to new collective needs and offer multiple opportunities for use. What is required of them is an increasingly marked flexibility: once they have lost the character of specialized places, they ask to be able to adapt to an ever wider number of activities: exhibitions, spectacular events, markets, parties, political events. These are places where the private and collective dimensions must somehow know how to coexist....
