The Migration, Ethnicity, Religion and Belonging (MERB) cluster provides a home for the exciting and varied research on issues of migration and belonging - as typified by current studies on race, ethnicity, religion and space occurring within and beyond SSPSSR. Employing a range of theoretical and methodological approaches and substantive foci, members of MERB are united by a shared interest in the ‘external’ socio-cultural and political environments in which racial, citizenship, and state/geographic identities and opportunities are constructed. We also share interests in the ‘internal’ environments of community, family and embodied capacities/identities through which individuals and groups resist and act creatively upon these horizons of constraint and possibility. This dual view is also reflected by research on the tensions between the ‘public’ and ‘private’ and how these both shape and are shaped by the dynamics of religious identity in the UK and beyond. Current research on race and ethnicity (e.g. on the ‘second generation’ or ‘mixed race’) explores how individuals develop identities through strategies of adaptation, integration and mobilization. Globally, some 70 million people have an intellectual disability and/or autism. The pattern of service provision in high income countries is often similar to that in the UK, though by no means universally so. Institutions remain the only option in many countries and even such rudimentary services as institutions are not available in many low income countries. Despite the successes many challenges remain. Many children and adults, especially those with complex needs, continue to live out of their local areas in institutional settings. Many children and families do not receive the early intervention or support that they need. Most adults do not have the opportunity to work. Health care remains of very poor quality. In short, many children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autism continue to be discriminated against and excluded from many aspects of an ordinary life. Changing this state of affairs requires staff with great skills. These skills include the capacity to understand and work with individuals for example, making sure that "challenging" behaviour does not prevent participation in ordinary activities.
