The Department aims to provide high quality, liberal education for future teachers of English in an inspiring, challenging and productive environment. Emphasis is equally placed on: the development of professional competencies and appropriate subject and pedagogical content knowledge, the application of the information provided in diverse settings, and the adoption of values essential for becoming an active, responsible and independent member of the community. The achieve these goals, the department strives to encourage critical thinking, stress an integrated approach to learning, encourage self-evaluation and reflection, and support lifelong dedication to learning. The program offers a whole array of both compulsory and optional courses in the areas of practical language, linguistics, literature and culture, and ELT methodology. Graduates of the master’s program are equipped with the necessary competences to enable them to work as lower secondary English teachers or English teachers at language schools. They are also qualified for work in out-of-school institutions (e.g. leisure time centres). They can also be employed in non-teaching positions requiring an excellent knowledge of English (e.g. in public administration).
