The program is taught in English. UCO offers only the second year of this Master degree. It is designed for students who have graduated with a Bachelor of Arts or Science in any of the life and natural sciences AND who have completed their first year of a Master degree in a related field (biology, ecology, geography, environment, chemistry, geology, urban planning...). However, students from varied academic backgrounds such as engineering, law and management focused on environmental issues are encouraged to apply to the program. OVERVIEW During this year in environmental management you will use quantitative methods and analytical tools to manage natural and urban environments. You will learn the fundamentals of ecological theory and project management including scope definition, work planning, resource and risk management, along with human relations skills. As a graduate of this program, you’ll have an international perspective on sustainable development and environmental monitoring throughout study cases, fieldtrips, data collection and laboratory work. An internship at the end of your second year will allow you to use the skills needed to conduct independent field research projects in natural or urban environments (direct observation and data collection, research design, field methodology…). The internship can be conducted in Europe or abroad. 

 You’ll be a student at the biology department at UCO at the Faculty of science in the Loire River Valley in France where they conduct thesis-level research related to conservation and ecological management in a real-world setting. 
Industry and agencies seek scientists with project management skills, and graduates of this program will be in high demand. This program trains future managers in the ecology of natural resources, urban ecology, environmental management, business and project management. Job roles for graduates include planning and implementation of resource management for public agencies, helping corporations develop and implement sustainable practices, analyzing how well a private agricultural firm’s policies meet sustainability standards, and overseeing new urban construction projects to minimize environmental impact. Le contexte Malgré les progrès considérables réalisés tant au niveau de la production agricole qu’à celui de la transformation et de la conservation des produits, ou encore de la distribution des denrées alimentaires, le nombre de personnes souffrant de la faim ou de malnutrition dans le monde augmente. La forte hausse du prix de certaines matières premières, amorcée en 2007, a démontré de manière flagrante "la fragilité du système alimentaire mondial et la vulnérabilité de la sécurité alimentaire" (Sommet mondial de l’alimentation, 2009). Cette situation ne devrait cesser de se dégrader, eu égard aux simulations portant sur l’évolution démographique mondiale et, plus encore, régionale, avec une part relative accrue des populations des pays en développement et en transition. Enfin, l’urbanisation croissante rend encore plus complexe la gestion de cette sécurité alimentaire. Concevoir la mise en œuvre des moyens permettant de gérer la disponibilité et l’accessibilité des ressources alimentaires ainsi que ceux permettant la satisfaction de la prise alimentaire constitue l’objectif de cette formation. Le Master "Management de la sécurité alimentaire des villes" dure 16 mois, dont 12 en France. La formation est organisée autour de 8 Unités d’enseignement (UE) se déroulant de septembre à avril. This Master aims to help students to develop a critical understanding of contemporary planning challenges for cities and urban regions, in the context of climate change and growing human needs. The programme is designed so that students may confront up to date scientific knowledge on planning with their own cultural background and planning experiences. Through the Master, each student becomes familiar with the advantages and limitations of cross-national transfer of ‘good practices’ in the urban or regional policy field. As a research Master, this program trains students to deal with up to date research issues and methods. It prepares students to start a PhD or to take leadership roles in urban development and management, especially in an international context. Since it opened, in September 2010, this Master has attracted an average of 15 students per year, coming from the EU countries or from countries neighboring the EU, but also from North America, from Asia, and from the Middle East. This Master is offered by the Planning and Environment Department of the Polytechnic School, one of the largest planning schools in France, through its staff, its number of postgraduate students, or its number of graduates. The Department is member of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) and of the French-speaking association of planning schools (APERAU Internationale) and also active within the Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN). The curriculum interacts with researches conducted by the laboratory Cities, Territories, Environnement, and Societies (a unit of the National Scientific Research Council and of Université François-Rabelais). The various research programmes carried out by one of its four research groups - the team “Urban and regional planning projects, landscape and environment”- provide the intellectual environment for the development and the discussion of each student’s individual research. The courses and research topics offered within this Master stem out from research carried out in the following axes: Planning systems and projects, Environmental and landscape dynamics, Risks and vulnerabilities, Sustainable local and regional development. The PS/URP, empowered as a specialty Master until 2018, was enhanced in 2014 by the addition of a new 30h teaching unit: "Urban Aquatic Ecosystems" (coordinated by Professor Karl Matthias Wantzen, one of the UNESCO Chair "River Culture" responsible). This illustrates a very positive impact of the fusion, in April 2014, between the Planning department and the IMACOF (Ingénierie des Milieux Aquatiques et des Corridors Fluviaux) department, after the authorization for six years delivered by the Engineer Titles Commission of the new specialty in Planning and Environment Engineering. During the first semester, the curriculum is organized around 150 hours of seminars and workshops (30 ECTS). The second semester is devoted to a research internship of 5 months (30 ECTS).
