Welcome to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences! We hope you will take a few minutes to see what our department has to offer. We are committed to providing our students with excellent educational experiences that will prepare them to enter the workforce, further their education, and/or engage in community service upon graduation. -

The MA program provides general course work in each of the major fields of political science. Students may choose either the thesis option, under which they complete 30 credits of course work plus 6 thesis credits (POLS 599 Master's Thesis), or the nonthesis option, with 30 credits of course work plus 6 hours of special research credit (POLS 598 Special Research Programs) or 6 hours of approved internship credit (POLS 510 Internship). Both the thesis and nonthesis options require a final oral examination; the non thesis option requires a written examination as well. The program provides a broad-based foundation in political science while allowing students to pursue specific areas of interest. -

The Master of Arts in Sociology provides advanced training in qualitative and quantitative research design, interpretation, and theory to understand individuals, groups, organizations and communities. Elective courses focus on social inequality based on race/class/gender as well as reflect the faculty specializations in Education, Migration, the US-Mexico Border, Community Development, Alternative Economies, Social Movements, Digital Media, Political Sociology, Environmental Sociology, Popular Culture, and Social Psychology. We provide our students an education that can lead to careers outside of academia or prepare them to pursue doctoral studies if desired. -

The Master of Arts in Counseling is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers. Training is provided by skilled professors and courses in a wide spectrum of subjects, including: Career Counseling Child and Adolescent Counseling Grief/Loss/Trauma Counseling Marriage and Family Counseling Mental Health Counseling Multicultural Counseling Rehabilitation Counseling School Counseling Substance Abuse Counseling There are four clinical strands embedded into the Counseling Program: 1) Mental Health Counseling, 2) School Counseling, 3) Substance Abuse Counseling, and 4) Rehabilitation Counseling. The final two of these strands must be completed along with the Clinical Mental Health Master’s degree, this allows students in the 3rd and 4th strands to qualify for two licenses. All four programs require students to complete 60 credit hours of course work (see degree plans) as well as 700 hours of practicum/internship. Students are responsible for determining placement for practicum/internship. Students pursuing their degree out of state are strongly advised to check with the respective state licensure boards to ensure that our WNMU program meets the requirements of that state. All of the MS programs in counseling can be completed entirely online, although some classes are synchronous, meaning that they necessitate students to attend classes via video conferencing at specified time blocks. -

The specialization in the Master of Social Work Program at New Mexico State University is advanced generalist social work practice with populations of the Southwest. Building on the liberal arts’ perspective and foundation courses, students develop advanced skills and knowledge in working with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. These advanced skills and knowledge incorporate cultural responsiveness to the needs of populations of the Southwest, and addresses client systems in the context of social, cultural, community, and other environmental factors. -
