The Master of Arts in Political Communication is a joint degree program between the School of Public Affairs and the School of Communication. It combines expertise and scholarship to develop a thorough grounding in political science, strategic communication, research, and media. The interdisciplinary degree prepares you to navigate the fast-changing landscape of politics and communication-our students gain the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding to be successful as political advocates, policy-makers, communication professionals, and campaign executives.

The Master of Science in Terrorism & Homeland Security Policy at AU’s School of Public Affairs will train you to tackle the problems of terrorism and other threats that endanger the security of the United States. You’ll approach security issues informed by social science, with attention to the perspectives of criminology and criminal justice. Our program emphasizes the development of strategic, policy-based security solutions at the federal, state, and local levels of government.

The United States Foreign Policy and National Security (USFP) program will prepare you to be an effective international affairs practitioner. We have designed the program to enable students to step into a variety of jobs that demand the knowledge and analytic skills of a professional with expertise in US foreign and national security policy. Our graduates work in the intelligence community, the White House, executive branch agencies such as the State and Defense Departments, Congress, private sector consulting firms, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations.

The MA Program in International Security provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of the international security environment of the 21st century. To enable students to master the complex challenges of the post-9/11 world, the program views security from a broad theoretical and historical perspective, placing traditional security concerns in the context of such fields as development, economics, and human rights. Students focus on topics including strategy, foreign policy, intelligence, homeland security, military analysis, regional security and conflict resolution. The curriculum combines relevant coursework with a mandatory internship, providing students with the knowledge and skills demanded by the market for the international security professional, broadly defined. Graduates are exceptionally well prepared to serve as administrators, executives, diplomats, military and civil servants, policy analysts, and consultants.

The MA in International Human Rights provides students with the opportunity to explore issues of human dignity while critically examining the norms, processes, and institutions designed to promote and protect human rights in our globalizing world. The program is unique among its peers for its interdisciplinary nature, linking human rights to development, health, security and humanitarian assistance, and for its emphasis on theory and practice. For breadth, the core curriculum offers courses in human rights theory, history, law, foreign policy and economic development. Courses with thematic perspectives link human rights to security, economic development, administration, gender and other issues.

This degree focuses on the theologies and ministries of peace while exploring social change theories, social transformation methodologies, adaptive action models, conflict resolution, and restorative justice, all with the goal of empowering movement and transformation within communities, organizations, and churches.

This unique program, offered in partnership with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, trains students to carry out public communications for governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector.
