With its rich history of Shakespeare, Marlowe, Stoppard, Coward and more, the UK is often seen as the place to not only visit the theatre but also to study and explore as a student. The UK’s emphasis on and continued support for the theatre makes it an ideal place for aspiring drama and theatre students to pursue their studies, at both the undergrad and postgrad level.
Undergrad students can expect to be plunged right into the heart of theatre from day one. As UK undergrad degrees are far more focused and specialized, most students will experience acting on a regular basis and be given far more responsibility and roles as an undergrad than they would have at a US institution. In terms of technical and behind-the-scenes theatre, students will be given hands-on training much faster than they would as an undergrad in the states. Many UG Drama or Theatre courses offer an array of specialities such as acting, directing, or even studying plays themselves from an English degree. Two of our partner universities, the University of Leeds and Oxford Brookes University, offer sandwich courses which adds an additional year of study involving full-time work placement right in the theatre industry, often with playhouses or studios....

Staff have special interests in the music of China and Central Asia (Harris), Korea (Howard), Japan, Indonesia and Thailand (Gray), India and Nepal (Widdess), the Islamic Middle East (Wright), the Jewish world (Wood), West Africa and Cuba (Durán) and South and East Africa (Impey). But research is not limited to these areas: projects have been undertaken on American jazz, and on the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Eastern European music, for example. They acquire expert knowledge about performance and the geographical or stylistic region of their performance specialism.
The performance component of the programme, in which students choose an Asian or African performance tradition, includes practice-based research. Duration: 3 Years
Term Start: October 2019
You will normally be expected to hold a first-degree qualification (2.2 or above), hold an equivalent qualification or be able to demonstrate considerable professional or practical experience at a level commensurate with ability to work at Masters’ level study. The award should be in a discipline which underpins your proposed programme of study or which can be shown to have provided appropriate practical or conceptual skills to contribute to the study.
Applications for the MFA International Theatre Practice and Performance are made to Rose Bruford College.
As part of the application process, applicants will be required on their application form to make a written statement outlining their intent/mission statement/ interest in the subject area and the programme. They will also need to submit material, a play they have written if they are a writer, a portfolio if they are a director, a reel or filmed scene or two contrasting monologues if they are an actor. Multi-discipline artists are encouraged to apply, if they are a director/playwright/actor/composer, for example, they will submit materials that give a sense of their work in each area. There are a number of auditions being held in USA and Europe if applicants are available to attend an audition in person that would be preferable.
