The Master’s Program in Conflict and Democracy Studies focuses on the discussion of the variety of potential relationships between democracy (and its quality), authoritarianism, totalitarianism, democratization, and conflict. We understand conflict to be a permanent, invariant feature of humankind, one that fuels both progress and failure. Since humans first began to establish rich social (and societal) ties, there have been struggles for power and a search for the best possible regime in any given time and place. Sometimes, to achieve their goals, conflicting parties use violence; sometimes they are able to come to a peaceful solution.

A key question, therefore, becomes whether it is possible to democratize (or decentralize) various (deeply divided) societies without fuelling ethnic, religious, or other conflicts. Following that is the question as to whether and how the threat of violent conflict is used by authorities to entrench, sustain, or even deepen autocratic tendencies. A focus on these questions is therefore natural and prudent.... [-]

Conflicts are everyday occurrences in people's lives, social groups and international relations. In all historic times, in all cultures, groups, and countries, the quest for peace has been ongoing. Costs incurred because of conflicts are very high: human suffering, economic losses, and moral degradation.

The efforts made by humankind to live in peace give us the insight to accomplish real results, eliminate war, transform conflicts and manage them positively. This master course in conflictology draws from this insight, systematizes knowledge and presents it in an advanced and efficient educational manner.... [-]

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the world imagined a scenario of peace, having ended the Cold War and the East-West confrontation, which characterized the international relations of the 20th century; However, the disappearance of this "wall of contention" gave rise to a series of conflicts that remained latent and that began to manifest with great virulence, and many others that have emerged already into the 21st century.

This Master in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution offered by the Seneca Institute, constitutes a high specialization in two key areas for the management of crisis or conflict situations, such as the different types and forms of negotiation, taking into account the actors involved and the differences or coincidences that they present, as well as the type of event that is intended to attend, its origin, its implications, its impact, and the aspects derived from it....
