This intensive programme leads graduates with a bachelor's degree to a Master of Science (M.Sc.) within 18 months. After a 3-year doctorate programme, graduates may acquire either the title Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Dr. rer. nat. The semester structure has been removed, different subjects are integrated into a uniformly structured range of courses and it is possible to switch into the doctorate programme without a master's thesis, thus shortening the period of study. All courses are held in English.The programme is divided into two parts. During the first year, lectures, tutorials, seminars, methodical internships and individually tutored research projects take place within 36 weeks. Lab rotation and individual tutorials, as well as the involvement of lecturers from Max Planck institutes, guarantee work that is hands-on and research-oriented. The first year of study ends with one written and two oral exams that qualify for the master's thesis. These may be omitted if good or excellent grades have been attained during the first year of study, allowing the student to switch directly over to the 3-year doctorate programme.Early participation in scientific conferences and courses, as well as the publication of articles in international scientific journals, are also required for the doctoral degree. The two years Master Course in Molecular Biotechnology is designed to provide the cultural background of multidisciplinary biotechnologies for the production of goods and services through the use of biological systems; in particular the course is designed to prepare skilled graduates with scientific knowledge and professional abilities in the field of biotechnologies applied to the study, prevention and diagnosis of human diseases, with particular interest in the development of innovative drugs.
The Master program intends to provide classes organized on an interdisciplinary basis to be applied to various fields of molecular biotechnology, with emphasis on the fields of research, diagnostics, and therapy. Training activities are also organized as stages to be carried out at research institutes or companies operating in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, diagnostic and biomedical sectors. The training activities may be combined with research activities in selected laboratories with the aim of generating experimental data for the preparation of the thesis to be discussed in the final exam. The Master program in Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Torino meets these challenges in an innovative way by combining the fields of Molecular Biology, Molecular Imaging and Drug Discovery, and Bioinformatics.
