Theory and History of Psychology is a very special program, that gives you the tools to see beyond the discipline's present horizons (requiring a background in Psychology). It is run by a group of specialists in the Theory and History of Psychology, and it is unique in Europe, we know of only three such English-speaking graduate programs in the world.

Sustainability Psychology at the University of Leuphana is taught by members from various departments of the institute of psychology. The Institute's members are enthusiastic about research that answers fundamental psychological questions and at the same time focuses on their usefulness for sustainable social transformation processes. The Institute's psychological research focuses on changes in individuals at the micro level (e.g. negotiations in business relationships, fairness in performance evaluations) and at the macro level on changes in sub-areas of society (e.g. stakeholders in collective bargaining conflicts, occupational health managers).

As a research master student you choose one of our three multidisciplinary themes. The theme-specific courses will give you a broad view on the theme and will introduce you to the unique perspectives of the theme-related specializations. In our master's program, we highlight which social psychological factors determine human behaviour, and how these factors can be influenced. Based on social psychological theories, we outline how such factors can be studied, and how knowledge derived from research can be implemented in an applied context.

Our aim is to understand why psychology became the way it is, how it has been understood, how it negotiates its boundaries with other allied sciences, and how it could be improved. We focus on the social, methodological, philosophical, and conceptual issues that underlie contemporary psychology. For this reason, our Program will appeal particularly to students who wonder why things are the way they are, dare to question established truths, and dream about how they could be different.

This new master's track focuses on psychological contributions to both forensic and legal contexts. This program will give you insight into why people misbehave and commit crimes, what the concept of criminal irresponsibility is, and how forensic patients need to be treated. Besides these typical forensic topics, the program offers insight into legal psychological topics such as deception detection and legal decision-making.

This master's track is aimed at forming science-informed practitioners in health psychology and behavior change, who can tackle societal challenges by also using the power of technology. How can we use scientific knowledge and technological innovations to solve current health and societal challenges? Can we combine an evidence-based approach to behavior change with the creative design thinking process involved in the development of digital interventions?

This online master's track focuses on the role of digital media in human thought and behavior. In this online specialization, you will study something that has profoundly changed our society: digital media. You will learn to apply theories from Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Educational Psychology to address this topic. You will furthermore receive training in methods such as experience sampling, text mining, and educational analytics. 

We are transported to an imaginary world when we read a story merely by looking at black marks on a white sheet of paper. We can rapidly decide if an animal is a cat or a dog, even though we have never seen the particular animal before. When something in our environment appears to be threatening, we automatically focus on its movement and shape rather than on its colour and other details. Memory, language, categorisation and emotion are all cognitive functions. Sophisticated and theoretically motivated experimental studies can enable a better understanding of the way the brain operates while executing these functions. In a unique learning environment, you will examine cognitive and emotional processes in the brain. The Psychology curriculum consists of a series of modules or courses. Every course covers one specific psychological theme. All of the activities that you will undertake during this course, i.e. lectures, tutorials, practical meetings and assignments, are related to this theme. The Master’s programme consists of three courses in which you will study the topics of the specialisation of Brain and Cognition and one course in statistics.
