Mathematics

A masters is awarded to students who have completed postgraduate level study in a specific field of study or area of professional practice while demonstrating a high level of mastery during the process.

Advanced mathematics training can focus on the basic theories of quantum mechanics in which a single particle system is observed and analyzed in order to make predictions about experiment outcomes.  Hydrodynamic stability can be another advanced subject covered in a mathematics program.

Sweden (Sverige) is the largest of the Nordic countries, with a population of about 9.5 million. It borders Norway and Finland and is connected to Denmark via the bridge of Öresund (Öresundsbron). Sweden has a strong tradition of being an open, yet discreet country.

The technology we use in today's society is to an ever-increasing extent based on mathematical models and calculations.

This programme will suit anyone who is interested in mathematics and wants to apply his or her skills to problem-solving and for creating new mathematical models. It also gives you the possibility to start an academic career.

There are three specializations (all end with a master thesis work).

Analysis with Mathematical Physics: Gives you a comprehensive education in mathematics, aimed at mathematical physics. You study courses in complex analysis, distribution theory, and partial differential equations

We also have an agreement with the University of Insubria in Como in Italy, where a corresponding programme is offered. This means that you have a large selection of courses to choose from. You also have the possibility to, without any study fees, study one or two semesters in Como in order to be conferred a so-called double degree i.e., a degree from two different universities, which may be an advantage if you are considering an international career.... Mathematics at KTH

The courses in the programme are organised in three blocks – the basic block, the profile block and the broadening block. The basic block provides an in-depth education in Mathematics at an advanced level. Within this block, it is mandatory to take one course in each of these areas: algebra and geometry, analysis, topology, and discrete mathematics. In the profile block, courses are chosen freely to specialise and prepare for the master's thesis – the subject is regarded in a broad sense, including mathematical statistics, optimisation theory and theoretical computer science. The broadening block contains courses on theory and methodology of science, communication of mathematical subjects and a half term of freely elective courses.... [-]

The programme contains four tracks: Computational Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Optimization and Systems Theory, and Statistical Learning and Data Analytics.

Applied and Computational Mathematics at KTH

The programme consists of foundation courses that are mandatory for all students, and once the individual specialisation track is chosen, there are relevant required courses within that area as well. Regardless of which track students attend, the final term consists of a degree project that may be carried out in an academic or industrial environment in Sweden or abroad. Students are welcome to discuss project ideas with the staff at the Department of Mathematics but are also encouraged to seek other contracts, in the academic world and in industry, to identify suitable projects. The result of the degree project is provided as a written report and as a presentation at a seminar.... [-]
