The Master in Language and Mind is a highly interdisciplinary program aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of language as a human cognitive capacity, combining theoretical perspectives in Linguistics and Philosophy with their different and many applications in fields such as Computational Linguistics, Psycholinguistics and Text Analysis.

The Program is designed for graduates with a background in language and related areas (for example, English, Modern or Classical Languages, Linguistics, Psychology, Anthropology), looking to explore the theory and methodology of linguistics in-depth, from the study of sound (phonetics and phonology) to the study of words (morphology), sentences (syntax) and meaning (semantics and pragmatics). The MA in Applied Linguistics is a program that allows you to develop expertise in specific areas of linguistics, such as corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and/or language pedagogy. The program combines a range of core modules and optional modules to ensure that you develop a solid foundation in the discipline area whilst also having the flexibility to pursue your own specific research interests.

MA Applied Linguistics with TESOL is designed for experienced teachers – with more than a year’s professional language teaching experience – wishing to develop their knowledge of linguistics and understand its potential applications in language teaching. We aim to equip students with the linguistic and pedagogic knowledge, the research and analytic skills, and the confidence necessary to develop their careers in English language teaching, and/or to move into areas such as teacher training or ELT management.

Modern linguistics is the scientific study of all aspects of the world’s languages from their sound systems and grammatical structure through to the interaction of language with culture, the study of meaning in language, and the use of language in modern technology. MA Linguistics at SOAS is a modular programme which combines the intensive study of the core areas of formal linguistics - phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics - with a choice of options in different areas of the discipline.
