The objective of this Master's training is to provide students with in-depth knowledge in the fields of French and French language, literature, linguistics and civilization. The diploma also includes knowledge of French at level C2, and makes it possible to hire the holder in intermediate or senior positions where adequate use of French, and literary, linguistic and cultural skills are necessary.

You will achieve a high standard of language and a high level of accuracy. Our Interpreting (Chinese Pathway) MA course is taught in collaboration with KL Communications Ltd, whose Managing Director, Dr Kevin Lin OBE, is the Lead Interpreter (Chinese) for the UK government’s Foreign Office. Our program has a strong practical component that responds to the needs of the Chinese interpreting market. It will give you advanced interpreting skills in all interpreting modes, including consecutive/simultaneous interpreting, chuchotage, sight translation, dialogue, and distance interpreting.

Gain industry-relevant skills and knowledge in Simultaneous Interpreting, Consecutive Interpreting, Public Service Interpreting and Remote Interpreting. Our Interpreting MA uses English and Chinese as working languages.

This is the only course in the UK that will give you advanced interpreting skills in all interpreting modes, including consecutive, simultaneous, dialogue, and distance interpreting. We’re the first university to teach video-mediated and telephone interpreting based on research in distance interpreting, giving you excellent and flexible career opportunities.

The Master in Language and Mind is a highly interdisciplinary program aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of language as a human cognitive capacity, combining theoretical perspectives in Linguistics and Philosophy with their different and many applications in fields such as Computational Linguistics, Psycholinguistics and Text Analysis.

This second-cycle degree program (laurea magistrale) provides graduates with an advanced level of competence (at least C1) in two languages (chosen amongst English, Russian, Chinese and French), and a solid background in economic and legal studies. In doing so it offers an interdisciplinary preparation which responds to the needs of today’s work world, with particular attention to issues of sustainability and to the increasing demand for skills in the area of linguistic and cultural mediation, including in situations of conflict.

Chinese Studies is a multidisciplinary field of study, drawing upon and integrating disciplines such as History, Linguistics, Politics, Cultural Studies and Translation Studies. The course focuses on China today and China over the last century. This course offers a unique and vibrant educational experience which equips its students to be global citizens.

The MA Chinese Studies provides an exceptional opportunity to take advantage of the wide range of disciplinary approaches to the study of Chinese societies available at SOAS. The main emphasis is on modern and contemporary China, although it is also possible to study aspects of pre-Modern China. In addition to the courses on offer, students develop their own particular area of specialisation by writing a dissertation in their major discipline.
