The Graduate School of Christian Studies was established in April 2009 to significantly expand the Graduate School of Arts’ Program in Systematic Theology. Christianity at Rikkyo University inherits the traditions of the Anglican Church, but the Graduate School of Christian Studies does not restrict itself to particular denominations or faiths, instead of taking an ecumenical stance with an emphasis on the academic, multifaceted analysis and research of matters surrounding Christianity. A distinguishing feature of this program is that in addition to traditional academic approaches such as Bible Studies, Biblical Archaeology, Church History, Systematic Theology, Religious Studies, and the History of Christian Music and Art, there are also numerous practical skill subjects in which students can engage in Field Studies and Service Learning or Church Music such as organ performance and choral conducting. In this way, we aim to study Christianity in contact with real society, not just within the University or seminar rooms. The Graduate School of Christian Studies serves a major role within Rikkyo University as a center of research and education that relates to our founding principles and has twelve full-time faculty members providing research guidance. Through earnest research and passionate education, we explore the possibilities of twenty-first-century Christian Studies as a field that responds to the needs of modern society. Conscious of the global arena, we aim to develop the center for Christian Studies into a leading research institution for Christian Studies in Japan and East Asia.

The Graduate School of Art was established in 1951 as a master’s program in Literary Arts, but has since expanded to a full-scale comprehensive graduate school of the arts that currently offers master’s programs in Literary Arts, Image Arts, Fine Art and Design, Musical Arts, and Performing Arts. While the emphasis is on education in the various departments, the School is also engaged in high-level research. The doctoral program consolidates all the arts into a single field, making possible even deeper research into the arts than at the master’s level. Apart from research and creation within each specialized field, we also encourage collaboration with adjacent fields and aim for an understanding of the arts from a broad perspective. In particular, the doctoral program lends equal weight to the theory and history of each of the arts and to studies of artistic expression, and we instruct our students to conduct balanced research between theory and expression in order to obtain a doctoral degree.

The Master's program is divided into three courses. Educators working in research and teaching amount to three times the number of students enrolled. The Japanese Literature major mainly researches classical literature, contemporary literature, and Japanese language studies. Graduate students choose specialties from among the following: ancient times (Nara Period), medieval times (Heian Period), the middle ages (Kamakura and Muromachi Periods), early modern times (Edo Period), contemporary times (Meiji Period and thereafter), or Japanese language studies; but it is also possible to study across multiple periods. The English Literature and English Education programs include three fields. The English literature field focuses mainly on English and American literature, Studies in Language and Culture, and the English language field uses connectives and pragmatics as samples of the linguistic culture of various English-speaking countries for research. The English education field cultivates English teachers who can contribute to inter-cultural exchange through the promotion of linguistic education using English. Furthermore, the English education course meets the needs of current teachers (elementary, junior high, and high school teachers) by offering programs with flexible schedules, such as lectures at night, so that teachers can attend while continuing to work. The international culture field mainly focuses on local culture and international culture. Graduate students specialize in set regions of Europe or Asia, or in the systems and relations between certain regions and countries. In addition, the Doctoral programs established for the Japanese Literature, English Literature, and English Education programs enhance specialization even further.

Yokohama, where our graduate program was established in 1990, is a port which promoted new engagement with the world at the end of the Edo period. Dr. James Hepburn built the foundation of Meiji Gakuin University here in Yokohama. The spirit of the university is to search for truth going beyond national borders, to act not just for personal profit but for the good of all, and to contribute to the world. Our graduate program has been striving to inherit this Meiji Gakuin spirit. Today, humankind is facing various global-scale problems and respective issues related to local communities. In order to cope with these challenges, scholars are in great need of both new networks with non-academic practical workers and transdisciplinary frameworks that would cut across conventional academic fields. The Graduate Program in International Studies strives to serve people who wish to devote themselves to this intellectual pursuit. The curriculum does not conform to conventional academic frameworks but rather centers around three main pillars: Japanese and Asian Studies, Peace Studies, and International Community Studies. Graduate students deepen their study of a chosen field through focused individual guidance from the professor who will serve as a chief examiner on their thesis, but may also take classes in different fields or receive guidance from other professors. In addition, the program has established a system for admitting people from various backgrounds who wish to pursue in-depth study of a subject related to their area of professional or non-academic experience, thereby opening the doors of the graduate school to motivated members of the community, regardless of their nationalities, with a desire to continue lifelong learning. We welcome applications from all individuals who want to join our Yokohama community in the pursuit of open-hearted learning.
