Master in Product Design

Domus Academy
Campus Full time 12 months September 2017 Italy Milan

The Master in Product Design program combines the study of theory with the process of direct experience. Besides honing the “problem solving” skills that every designer needs, you will also develop a “problem defining” approach: the ability to determine the true parameters of each design challenge. [+]

Masters 2017 in Milan Italy. Think. Sketch. Make. A good product began as a need that a designer identified and brought to life in the form of an object or mechanism. It is a reflection of society. It is about potentiality, adaptation, discovery. The Master in Product Design program combines the study of theory with the process of direct experience. Besides honing the “problem solving” skills that every designer needs, you will also develop a “problem defining” approach: the ability to determine the true parameters of each design challenge. As you learn to follow your intuition and promote your aesthetic vision within those parameters, you will cultivate more awareness of the reasons behind your own design choices, and those of others. During your workshop collaborations with eminent professionals from local studios and businesses, you will have the range to experiment with design methodologies as you develop a deeper understanding of product design and its role in our world. Audience The program is designed for candidates who have a first-level degree in design, architecture, engineering, visual arts, or related disciplines. Outcome During this degree program, students will: Complete a self-driven conceptual research project according to professional standards. Create innovative design work based on an understanding of the discipline and the place of their work within that context. Communicate concepts, methods, and design proposals in spoken, visual, and written form. Program The Master in Product Design program is workshop-based, supported by seminars, lectures, tutorials, and fieldwork. Industry professionals, the course leader, and project leaders guide students via individual coaching and project mentorship. The program consists of four main modules, each of which includes a two-week course and six-week workshop. The modules are followed by a two-month internship period and a final portfolio presentation. The modular structure is customizable, allowing flexibility and variety to better serve each student’s needs and goals. Courses Coursework focuses on: Exploring the nature, languages, and values of the contemporary design scene Analyzing new aesthetic and behavioral trends in the marketplace Identifying key factors that make a successful design solution Defining and solving design problems Branding your own work Workshops Guided by industry professionals and faculty project leaders, you will work in cooperation with leading companies on practical projects relating to product design. Some possible workshop topics include the following: Analyze user activity and social behavior to solve product design problems; use narrative design tools, such as storytelling, storyboards, and video. Investigate ways in which a company can ignite innovations in product design and industrial processes by adopting advanced production technologies and utilizing new materials. Develop a proposal that combines design approaches in a new, innovative, and surprising way. Your project might involve an established brand, an emerging company, a company that wishes to reposition its business, or a new venture. As you explore the relationship between people and spatial systems, develop concepts that address design for social/personal spaces, business and retail spaces, or public spaces. Portfolio The final element of the program is the portfolio review. You will present your portfolio of work completed during the year in front of an exam board for evaluation. Internship There is no better way for you to gain experience in your field than actually working in it. The internship is a chance for you to work onsite for a company or design studio in your field of interest—while applying all the strategies you learned in the classroom and in workshops. Alternatively, you can complete an intensive project in collaboration with a company on the Domus Academy campus. Either way, you’ll get an inside perspective on how your industry really works, and you can make important connections that will further your career. The internship lasts two months and comes at the end of your year of studies. 100% of our students participate in the internship, including non-EU students, who may extend their visas for up to one year to complete this portion of their studies. Companies Several prestigious companies and design studios collaborate with the Master in Product Design program, actively participating in courses, workshops, internships, and international competitions organized by the department. Students have the opportunity to work directly with companies like these in their workshop projects and internships. This direct collaboration facilitates mentorship and gives students access to a wide network of professional connections. Student testimonial " The dual degree “Politikwissenschaften- Affaires Internationales” at Sciences Po Paris and FU Berlin offers the chance to study in two different university systems in two outstanding European cities – Paris and Berlin. As I am very interested in international energy politics, I specialized in International Energy at Sciences Po Paris. While the classes were very practice-oriented and focused on economic aspects, I can now focus on a broader range of political sciences topics at FU Berlin. However, it is still possible to pick courses relating to the specialization I pursued at Sciences Po. Of course, the different approaches in France and Germany can be quite a challenge, but I personally consider them an opportunity to approach topics differently. Besides, I strongly recommend taking advantage from the possibilities students have to get involved in activities beyond University, which also help to sharpen the professional and academic profile." Lilly Höhn Dual degree Sciences Po - Freie Universität Berlin The Alumni Association The “Association Gerhard Kiersch Verein” (AGKV) was founded in 1995. Its name is intended to preserve the memory of a Professor at the Otto-Suhr-Institut , who initiated the Franco-German dual degree between Sciences Po and Freie Universität Berlin in the early 1980s. It brings together current students of the program and alumni to build a strong European network through its links with stakeholders in the political, economic, social and cultural sphere. In fact, many alumni currently work in diverse sectors including international organizations, the media, public services, business, consulting and research. This is a dual degree with Freie Universität Berlin. [-]
