Programme description The master’s programme approaches issues related to European relations in the context of an international society and global governance. The programme is divided into four components, each equivalent to one term: International relations European relations International governance/Guided internship Master’s thesis The curriculum consists of topics ranging from international law and security, to European institutions and Europe’s external relations, theories of international relations and organisation, foreign policy analysis, contemporary issues of international governance, and research design and methodology. During the third term, students have the option of either taking courses with a general focus on international and global governance, or to pursue a guided internship with an organisation of relevance for international or European relations. By the end of the programme students will have developed an independent critical approach to complex global, and specifically European, issues. Furthermore, students will gain the skills and knowledge to contribute actively to important developments, either as practitioners or as researchers. Students will also be able to: Understand the history, theory and contemporary implications of international and European relations, as well as the forces that drive developments Acquire the tools to reflect upon and analyse the dynamics of contemporary international and European relations Develop an in-depth understanding of issues regarding international governance and their significance Independently design a research question, conduct inquiries and then report on scientific matters within international and European relations. Justification and Purpose The Master Degree in International Relations at EEG intends to meet the need of advanced training in International Relations, as it accommodates itself to the requirements of the European Higher Education and in line with the changes resulting from the post-cold war and the 9/11, 2001. It is thus an eclectic education project, whose main objectives are: Offer advanced training on the main trends and dynamics of the contemporary International Relations Theory; Provide in-depth knowledge in specific fields (Diplomacy, International and Area Studies, respectively); Develop intellectual skills and practices in the field of International Relations, as well as soft skills (analysis, communication, problem-solving and interpersonal soft skills, among others). In this light, it is a four-semester-long programme which accumulates 120 ECTS. The first year is devoted to coursework, whilst combining six structural compulsory course units in the fields of Political Science and International Relations, and two optional course units within the scope of these two scientific areas, or complementary scientific areas such as Economics, Management or Administrative Sciences.
