Our world is united and fragmented. Common links and challenges bind the international community together, while political phenomena are increasingly driven by regional dynamics and by conflicting national perspectives on security, wealth and identity. Globalization is still on the move along with processes of regional integration and the proliferation of new states. Military power is still concentrated at the state level but is also becoming available to non-state actors. Technologies and information spread globally, and are variously transformed into forces for cooperation and conflict.

The two-year taught Master (Laurea Magistralis) in World Politics and International Relations is designed to help you analyze the major issues arising out of these processes. Whether you are aiming at a career in national or international public services, in non-governmental organizations or in the private sector, you need a multidisciplinary approach to grasp the key issues.... These are turbulent political times. International power bases are shifting. Political, economic and military threats merge and reform, presenting new political challenges. Examples like China and Russia prompt us to rethink the widely held belief that democratic reform will follow on the heels of economic progress. In these days of the “war on terror,” it is also more and more difficult to know what a war is, who fights it, how it starts and how it can end. In the meantime, global inequality is increasing. Half of the world’s population lives in severe poverty, many of them in conflict-ridden regions and/or under failing governments. Problems of development – malnutrition, poverty, preventable diseases – can be solved by a global effort, so why does it not happen?... [-]

The effectiveness and legitimacy of modern states are largely determined by the complex interaction of politics, law, and business and economics. Lately, in particular, these interactions have been affected by dynamic transformation processes resulting from globalization and internationalization trends. This has led to the formation of modified statehood forms and new patterns of relationships between state, society and the economy. The Master's degree in Political Science-Public Economics, Law and Politics applies a theoretical and methodological, as well as problem-oriented and integrated, political analysis of these dynamic interactions.

CONTENT AND RATIONALE

Studies in political science at Leuphana Graduate School combine disciplines, which traditionally deal with the relationship of state, society, and business and economics. Questions, issues and approaches to solutions resulting from these intricately interwoven relationships are analyzed and treated from the joined perspectives of political science, economics and law. The focus is placed on the causes, background, as well as social and economic effects and consequences, of government action. Thus, the course aims at achieving a comprehensive reflection on the relationship between politics, law and economics by applying the tools provided by political science as a discipline, reinforced by interdisciplinary observations. This course of study is part of the scholarship programme Public Policy and Good Governance of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Every year, DAAD selects around ten scholarship holders from Central and South American, African and Asian countries to come and study at Leuphana Graduate School. They enhance the experience of studying on this programme by lending... [-]
