Its objective is to give a deep understanding of the complexity of the current energy transformations in Europe and worldwide. The programme takes place in Berlin and Nice. The programme offers a unique, multidisciplinary approach which distinguishes it from other Master’s courses in the field of energy studies: It analyses the links between the different levels of energy governance, from an international to a local level, offering problem-focused learning at the crossroads of theory and practice. The one-year programme stretches over four terms and takes place in two study locations: Nice and Berlin Students who successfully complete the programme acquire 90 ECTS credits. The programme is structured into four terms: The first term (October-December) in Nice encompasses classes on the basics of the four energy modules: International energy governance, Economic energy governance, the EU energy governance and Energy and territories. Each module is complemented by seminars dealing with current energy issues. An academic or professional expert is invited for each event. For their second term (January-March) students move on to Berlin where teaching in the four modules continues in the form of workshops. Each module organises a half-day workshop with an expert. Students prepare the workshops in group work delivering papers on themes linked to the topic of the seminar (climate negotiations, energy stock exchange, the role of the EU interconnections in the European energy market, the EU funds and the territorial energy policy). To better understand the local energy challenges in the framework of the German Energy Transition Field, visits will also be organised in co-operation with local institutions and companies. Another focus of this term will be put on the methodology classes, one dedicated to the research work and the Master’s thesis, the second one to project management. In April students return to Nice. The third term (April-June) aims at deepening their knowledge on the four energy modules. A special focus is also given to the methodological support for the students’ work on their thesis including individual meetings with the academic supervisors. In the two simulations the participants will forge their negotiation techniques with regard to the construction of wind farms at local level and work out of a strategy for an international energy cooperation. Written and oral exams in June will conclude this term. From July to August students will work on their Master’s thesis. All along the summer, supervisors will be at their disposal to follow up their work. The defence of the students’ Master’s thesis will take place in Nice in mid-September. Teaching modules Conflict and cooperation in the international system The module aims at enriching students’ understanding of the similarities, differences and interactions of national foreign policies in a globalised world. It considers emerging patterns of international politics, including international law and international tribunals, globalisation and transatlantic relations, as well as conflict management. European integration and external action At the beginning of the new millennium, the European Union can look back at considerable achievements such as the completion of the monetary union. On the other hand, the EU remains confronted with huge challenges: New member states in Central and Eastern Europe need to be fully integrated, the EU institutions must be reformed, a common identity for foreign and security politics must be reinforced, the acceptance of the EU amongst its Member States’ populations needs to be strengthened. This seminar aims at familiarising the students, who could well become the next generation of European and international decision-makers, with an expert knowledge of the structures, institutions, and problems of the European Union. We focus firstly on the historical development of European unification and then go on to analyse the Union’s institutions and study the basics of EU law. The last part of the program is devoted to the different policies of the EU and especially emphasises the challenges of enlargement. Federalism and multi-level governance For the last fifteen years, federalism has known a revival as an international field of studies. In this framework, three major developments can be considered. The first is the study of the European Union, not analysed any more as a process of integration but in terms of federal institutional comparative approach. The second development is multi-level governance, that can be conceived as an extension of federalism as it deals with any form of multi-tier institutional system. This cooperative/competitive approach has appeared to understand the institutional consequences of the process of globalisation in post-industrialised societies, and of the subsequent changing of nature of sovereignty in the relevant states. Eventually, federalism has become a tool of conflict resolution, in order to resolve violent conflicts all over the world. Examples include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Iraq, and Nepal. It is also perceived as a solution for Syria, Cyprus, Ukraine, Libya… As well, new federal discourses have emerged in historically centralised countries. It appears that all these developments share a same multi-tier conceptual framework, referred to as federalism. As such, they add themselves to older federal questions, such as political co-operation, democratic representation, minority issues and economic coordination. However, understanding the contemporary evolution of the federal meaning and of its main uses requires an innovative analytical thinking. This module will bring together these new approaches and highlight the changing nature of federalism in an ever more complex world. Economic globalisation and sustainable development The main goal of this module is to shed a light on the key forces shaping economic globalization processes in their various dimensions: international trade, financial markets, currency issues, etc. Without going into the details of economic theory, the module helps students understand the contribution of these fundamental driving forces to long term economic development as well as major economic crisis. Beyond a broad overview of the current state of the world economy, the objective is to understand how globalization refers to the problem of international economic governance, and to describe the institutions, actors and processes at work when it comes to cooperation challenges in order to solve economic public goods management problems such as trade dynamism, financial stability or monetary cooperation. The module puts a specific focus on the role of the EU as an economic actor on the global stage, with its opportunities and challenges driven both by European specific evolutions and globalization trends. Master of Digital Humanities (Leuven) Digital Humanities is a young field of research, focused on the use of computational techniques to support research in the Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences. One of the key drivers of the field is the recent availability of large digital repositories within many areas of the Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences. These repositories offer the prospect of applying computational visualization, querying and analysis techniques, leading to the discovery of new knowledge and insights. The field also applies new digital techniques to enhance approaches, processes, skills and methods developed and applied in the Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences. This includes the use of digital techniques in instructional sciences, the use of digital games in social sciences or the use of digital techniques in on-line publishing. What is the Master of Digital Humanities all about? The Master of Science in Digital Humanities helps graduates from Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences programmes to develop digital competencies that will allow them to add digital dimensions to their own domain expertise. It aims to explicitly link these competencies to research questions, case studies and applications related to the domain expertise of the students. Graduates of this programme will be able to bring their own domain expertise to a significantly higher level of functionality, using digital tools and techniques. The programme is unique in Flanders and one of only a few in Europe. The programme is firmly framed in an explicit collaboration between the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Sciences - Department of Computer Science. Is this the right programme for me? Candidates have successfully completed a Master’s programme in the Humanities, Social or Behavioral Sciences. It aims to help such graduates to develop digital competencies that will allow them to add digital dimensions to their own domain expertise. It aims to explicitly link this knowledge and these competencies to case studies and applications related to the domain expertise of the students. It will train them to master information structures and functionalities of data, programming structures and technique to produce scripts for digital applications, tools for improving access and interactive use of data and the development of new digital applications. It will train them how to manage projects related to digitization and introduce them to emerging new digital technologies and their applications. As an advanced master program (master-after master), it is assumed that the students entering this program have already achieved the general academic competencies defined for any master's program. Nevertheless, it is also within the aims of the program to further strengthen these competencies, within the specific context that Digital Humanities offers. More specifically, graduates understand databases and query languages, scripting languages, project management and of some of the emerging technologies in Digital Humanities. They are able to formulate research goals, determine trajectories that achieve these goals, collect and select information relevant to achieve the research goals and interpret collected information on the basis of a critical research attitude. They are able to communicate scientifically. They are able to set up a requirement analysis and testing, to model a database and use SQL, to manage a project, to use a scripting language, to apply tools for Digital Humanities and to develop applications in Digital Humanities. They have the attitudes of valuing and fostering creative, critical and independent thinking, of applying an interdisciplinary and participative approach in innovative development and of striving towards opening the digital world to a broader society. Besides a core curriculum, the programme includes various training routes, each structured around an option, either as preparation for research in a specific sector of language sciences, or for one of the various occupations in the field of language. Duration of Course Obtaining a Specialised Master’s Degree in Language Sciences requires at least one year of study. The course can, however, be spread over a longer period. When an assessment is passed, the student receives the corresponding number of credits. Credits can be accumulated over 5 years. However, the student is not allowed to re-take the assessments of a course for which they have obtained a grade of at least 12/20 in the previous five academic years. Programme The programme comprises a set of 60 credits distributed as follows: Compulsory Core Subjects: 15 credits Linguistic Approaches to Cognition Psycholinguistics Language Sciences Optional Module: 30 credits Within the programme, the student chooses a specific theme, developed as part of an option, constituting a coherent set of specific teaching activities worth 30 credits, which characterises their programme cycle. Each option has either a scientific or a more professional nature. Each option is a minimum of 15 course credits, plus, for options of a more professional nature, specific learning activities account for 15 credits in the sector concerned and, for science-options, a dissertation/final project accounts for 15 credits. Profile of the programme The master’s degree in economic and social policy provides advanced training based on solid management fundamentals (economic policy, tax law, public and administrative law, etc.) at both national and European levels, providing a thorough understanding of decision-making, especially in public institutions. The curriculum includes: A first year of 60 credits divided into 20 general education credits (Belgian society and institutions, IPP tax law, internal policy of the European Union, public and administrative law, discrimination analysis), 30 credits in economic and social policy (economic policy, SEC national accounting, sustainable development and production, social economics, social policy and labour economics) and a specialized module of 10 credits (seminars in economic policy and social policy), plus optional language courses. This programme's objective is to develop skills in planning, carrying out, writing up and appraising research and to introduce you to the main techniques for qualitative and quantitative research, including conducting surveys, interviewing, running focus groups, designing experimental trails, using life history and observational techniques, and analysing data. The course also provides a base for students who are going on to do an MPhil or PhD by research, or may be of value if you commission or manage social research or use findings from research projects in your professional life. Please note: Students wishing to study on this programme must register MA in Social Research Methods offered by SSPSSR. Modules must be approved by the programme director. Programme structure Full-time students complete the MA in Methods of Social Research over twelve months. Study is divided between taught modules, which last for one term each, and dissertation work. For full-time students, a total of six modules must be taken over the first two terms. Supervised dissertation work, on a relevant agreed subject, is then undertaken during the remainder of the academic year. The MA can be taken on a part-time basis, typically over two years but flexible arrangements are also possible. When taking it over two years, part-time students choose three modules in each academic year, and write a supervised dissertation thereafter. The programme is also offered as a Postgraduate Diploma, which entails the same taught curriculum as the MA but does not require a dissertation. It is thus worth 120 credits [60 ECTS].
