Viewing research and practice as interdependent and mutually supporting, the MA in psychology with an emphasis in counseling psychology program is based on the scientist-practitioner training model. The program is committed both (1) to preparing counseling psychologists for advanced doctoral studies in psychology and (2) to providing training and experience that prepare students for practice. Its goal is to train psychologists who have a sound knowledge of the bases of counseling and psychotherapy. Adopting a multicultural perspective, the program also emphasizes the importance of multicultural competence in both research and practice. To qualify as a professional psychologist or psychotherapist, a student may be required to complete additional education and licensure proceedings, depending on the national requirements of the country in which he/she wishes to work. For example: To qualify as a professional psychologist in The Netherlands, students must have both a bachelor and a master degree in psychology. The M.A.I.S. programme is a two-year academic programme which centres on the advanced study of politics and international relations, international economics, history, and international and European law. Students have to complete an interdisciplinary thesis in this research-based programme. Equipped with extensive knowledge, strong analytical skills, some language competency, and the experience of an international community, graduates proceed to positions in international organisations, business, and government or to further research and academic careers. The M.A.I.S. is a joint Master’s degree of the Diplomatic Academy and the University of Vienna. Target group University and college graduates of all disciplines and all nationalities who wish to attain profound knowledge of international relations through a multidiscplinary Master’s programme. Structure MAIS1 In the first year of the Master of Advanced International Studies students attend classes in the fields of political science, international relations, economics and international economic relations, contemporary history, as well as international and European law. The student’s interests, preferences and prior knowledge are taken into account in individual student counselling sessions. The knowledge previously acquired in undergraduate programmes is complemented and supplemented, and the necessary basis for the analysis of specific topic areas in the MAIS2 year is created. MAIS2 In the second MAIS year students apply the knowledge acquired during the MAIS1 year in specialised courses and seminars to analyse problems and solve case studies. Methodological and interdisciplinary seminars, presented by prominent personalities from politics and science, prepare students for writing their Master’s thesis. In their Master’s thesis students are required to analyse a specific problem in international relations from the aspect of at least two academic disciplines. Study Trips In the first MAIS year a study trip to Brussels offers students the opportunity to examine European institutions at first hand. During the second MAIS year there is a study trip to the countries of the Western Balkans. Additional study trips (for example to Ukraine/Poland or Bulgaria) is offered to all programmes. In addition, there are excursions to international organizations headquartered in Vienna (UNO, OSCE, OPEC, UNIDO, IAEA, EUMC). Language Training Over the course of the two MAIS years students must complete language courses in German or French comprising at least 4 ECTS. In cooperation with the Language Centre of the University of Vienna and the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna the DA offers further optional courses in the official languages of the UN: Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish. The two-year master's programme East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS) is a multidisciplinary programme dealing with contemporary societal, political and economic aspects of the East Asian region as a whole. We regard East Asia as more than just the sum of countries in that region. Rather than offering "light-versions" of Chinese, Japanese or Korean Studies, we focus on current transnational and regional issues as well as on comparative approaches. Reflecting the common traditions as well as the growing interrelation between Northeast Asia (China, Japan and the two Koreas) and Southeast Asia, we expanded our regular activities in research and teaching to include the ASEAN countries. We believe that it is impossible to achieve a proper understanding of regional and country-specific issues without a solid foundation in established theories and methods of social science. Acquiring and utilising such methodology is therefore a core characteristic of our programme. However, even the best methodological skills are unlikely to produce optimal results if they are applied out of context. Historical and cultural tradition, customs, and values limit the number of actually available options and influence choices in East Asian societies just as anywhere else. It is therefore no coincidence that our programme is based at an area studies department. EcoS was first offered in the winter term 2008. The objective of the programme is to train experts in social science methods who apply their methodological skills to the East Asian region using a multidisciplinary approach. Accordingly, emphasis is put on transnational and regional issues and on comparative analyses. Students are equipped with academic research skills as well as the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practice. Graduates have comprehensive knowledge of the economic, political and cultural characteristics of East Asian countries as well as their development. They are able to apply this knowledge to practically relevant issues. The study programme consists of five independent modules, totalling 120 ECTS. In module 1, the fundamentals of one East Asian language (Chinese, Japanese or Korean) are taught. Students who already hold a Bachelor's degree or a similar qualification in one of these languages are required to take courses in a language in which they do not hold such degree or qualification. In modules 2 and 3, students examine economic and political aspects of the East Asian regions within four core mandatory seminars on East Asia’s economic systems, economic development, political systems and international relations. In module 4, students are given a certain degree of flexibility when they study East Asian societies from a cultural-historical perspective, including history, religions and intercultural negotiation. In module 5, previously acquired skills are refreshed and applied to a research theme which leads to the MA thesis. Students conclude their studies with an MA examination in form of a defensio of their MA thesis. Course contents of courses in modules 2 and 3 as well as especially module 4 correspond with our key areas of research of our EcoS staff (http://ecos.univie.ac.at/about-us/staff/). EcoS courses are characterised by an international spirit, as more than half of our students come from various countries within Europe or overseas.
