The European Integration and Global Studies branch of the Master in Advanced European and International Studies (MAEIS) is targeted at students who have completed their undergraduate studies. Its objective is to give students an overarching, encompassing vision of the political, social, economic, and cultural challenges of today’s world. Following the slogan “Learning and living Europe”, the participants rotate each trimester, moving their place of studies from Berlin to Nice and then to Rome. The MAEIS is a one­-year ­programme, subdivided into three study terms. Here teaching continues with a focus on the new international order, its the perspectives for conflict or cooperation, and the EU's role in this context. Lectures explore European interventions in diverse domains, such as trade, democracy promotion, conflict resolution, climate change, development aid, shedding a light on how EU institutions and policies are designed to make EU roles effective on the international stage. The second focus of the programme is laid on the current challenges the EU project is facing (euroscepticism, economic governance crisis, Brexit, refugee crisis). During this term students take their mid-term exams. A one-week study trip takes them to European and international institutions in Brussels, Strasbourg, Luxembourg. Teaching modules Conflict and cooperation in the international system The module aims at enriching students’ understanding of the similarities, differences and interactions of national foreign policies in a globalised world. It considers emerging patterns of international politics, including international law and international tribunals, globalisation and transatlantic relations, as well as conflict management. European integration and external action At the beginning of the new millennium, the European Union can look back at considerable achievements such as the completion of the monetary union. On the other hand, the EU remains confronted with huge challenges: New member states in Central and Eastern Europe need to be fully integrated, the EU institutions must be reformed, a common identity for foreign and security politics must be reinforced, the acceptance of the EU amongst its Member States’ populations needs to be strengthened. This seminar aims at familiarising the students, who could well become the next generation of European and international decision-makers, with an expert knowledge of the structures, institutions, and problems of the European Union. We focus firstly on the historical development of European unification and then go on to analyse the Union’s institutions and study the basics of EU law. The last part of the program is devoted to the different policies of the EU and especially emphasises the challenges of enlargement. Federalism and multi-level governance For the last fifteen years, federalism has known a revival as an international field of studies. In this framework, three major developments can be considered. The first is the study of the European Union, not analysed any more as a process of integration but in terms of federal institutional comparative approach. The second development is multi-level governance, that can be conceived as an extension of federalism as it deals with any form of multi-tier institutional system. This cooperative/competitive approach has appeared to understand the institutional consequences of the process of globalisation in post-industrialised societies, and of the subsequent changing of nature of sovereignty in the relevant states. Eventually, federalism has become a tool of conflict resolution, in order to resolve violent conflicts all over the world. Examples include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Iraq, and Nepal. It is also perceived as a solution for Syria, Cyprus, Ukraine, Libya… As well, new federal discourses have emerged in historically centralised countries. It appears that all these developments share a same multi-tier conceptual framework, referred to as federalism. As such, they add themselves to older federal questions, such as political co-operation, democratic representation, minority issues and economic coordination. However, understanding the contemporary evolution of the federal meaning and of its main uses requires an innovative analytical thinking. This module will bring together these new approaches and highlight the changing nature of federalism in an ever more complex world. Economic globalisation and sustainable development The main goal of this module is to shed a light on the key forces shaping economic globalization processes in their various dimensions: international trade, financial markets, currency issues, etc. Without going into the details of economic theory, the module helps students understand the contribution of these fundamental driving forces to long term economic development as well as major economic crisis. Beyond a broad overview of the current state of the world economy, the objective is to understand how globalization refers to the problem of international economic governance, and to describe the institutions, actors and processes at work when it comes to cooperation challenges in order to solve economic public goods management problems such as trade dynamism, financial stability or monetary cooperation. The module puts a specific focus on the role of the EU as an economic actor on the global stage, with its opportunities and challenges driven both by European specific evolutions and globalization trends. Finally, the module proposes an introduction to global sustainable development issues (climate change, access to water, etc.), as they are among the most decisive challenges that will shape the future of the world economy. The CLE Master Course is a program devoted to improving the quality of European Higher Education and strengthening intercultural communication. The programme encourages and supports: cooperation as well as student, scholar and staff exchange among universities; the worldwide promotion of the image of the European Union as a space of academic excellence; communication between university and cultural institutions and enterprises (Museums, Publishers, Foundations) as well as public and private companies; better career opportunities for its graduates and access to the international workforce. The School attracts a sizeable proportion of students from outside Kenya, in the African Region and beyond. The Masters programme in Environmental Anthropology aims to offer you the opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge of how different societies are influenced by the environment and manage natural resources and hazards, in relation to issues in human ecology, biodiversity management, sustainable development, environmental change and the practical applications of such knowledge. The aims include ensuring that as a graduate you will have a range of both practical and evaluative skills, and experience of conducting empirical or other applied research, to allow you to pursue work as a researcher or to inform whatever position you take up in the future. It is expected that such work might be undertaken in conjunction with a range of organisations including national or international environmental bodies, governmental departments, and non-governmental organisations. Our Anthropology research degree allows you to specialise in Environmental Anthropology. Doctoral degrees usually require three to four years of preparation, fieldwork and writing. Research students often forge independent linkages with overseas institutions, while many work with the numerous research fellows and staff in several research centres in the department, particularly the new Centre for Biocultural Diversity, and with our various partners, such as the Institute for Ecology in Bandung, Indonesia, the Centre for International Forestry Research in Indonesia, the Global Diversity Foundation. Course Structure The programme is taken over one year full-time, two years part-time. In each academic year there are three terms. Teaching for coursework takes place in the first and second terms. During the third term and the summer period students prepare their dissertation on a topic that reflects their own individual interests and experience. (Please note: All module offerings are subject to change and availability is not guaranteed) Features of the programme We follow an experiential and interactive learning method. We continue to experiment with ways of lecturing, running seminars and workshops, writing exams, designing assignments, supervising students, and evaluating essays and theses, to ensure that students learn by doing and so internalise substantive knowledge as well as the methods used by environmental anthropologists. A typical student will take assessed modules in Environmental Anthropology, Ethnobiological Knowledge Systems, Contemporary Ethnography, Social Anthropology and Research Methods. These modules involve a combination of lectures, seminar discussions and practical laboratories. Additionally students may opt to audit modules taught in DICE (the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology) on conservation biology, nature and tourism and the international wildlife trade. There are also informal workshop series in Practical Methods in Conservation Social Science (jointly held with DICE), cultural domain analysis, research design, and computer applications. There are also field trips to various gardens, zoos and museums in the Kent area, such as the Powell-Cotton Museum, Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, the Eden Project, the Brogdale National Fruit collection and the Aviary at Leeds Castle. Often taking time throughout the whole course to prepare for and carry out, the dissertation project is the culmination of the programme. Students often apply for funding from outside bodies and receive support from the department for overseas studies. They prepare proposals, practice methods, arrange for permits and letters of consent, and often take language classes to prepare for roughly 8 weeks of research between April and July 1st. They then write a 15,000 word dissertation that goes beyond a simple research report to argue a theoretical point and discuss research findings in much wider contexts. Increasingly, students are going on to publish edited versions of these projects, and are making substantive contributions to the research, development or conservation projects they work with. [-]
