The study programme has two academic traditions at the centre of its academic approach. First, theology, understood as the historical study of the Bible and the Christian tradition, combined with a contextual approach towards how religious faith and practices are lived out locally and globally today. Second, religious studies, which broadens its scope also towards other religious traditions and other religious texts. Common for the approaches is a common methodological interest for the study of texts and contexts, the interest for religious encounters, and a focus on contextual and lived religion.

Why choose this program?

Is the world moving closer together or is it drifting apart? History as a discipline has been increasingly reaching out beyond the limits of the nation-state in order to study this question. This new program challenges its students to explore international and transnational processes, institutions and movements from multiple perspectives.

Building on the broad range of thematic competences present at Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History and the inspiring environment provided by the University of Oslo and the city, students are encouraged to study the forces that connect and separate people across national borders.

By focusing on international and transnational history from the mid-19th century to the recent past, the program offers a broad and global historical perspective on political, cultural, social and economic processes both between and beyond nation-states. It includes a combination of closely integrated core and specialized courses. Over the first three semesters, students will be thoroughly prepared to write their final master's thesis through a practically oriented “horizontal” course module.... [-]

Public History

The public history program is addressed to all the BA graduates, not only in history, and even not only in the humanities, who would like to conduct the research about and promote the public uses of history. Public history has been operating since the 1970s as a subdiscipline of history, but also as a separate academic discipline. It is called the history "for the people, by the people, with the people, of the people" and deals with all the aspects of history outside the formal education (also academic education). It operates for many years at the universities worldwide and enjoys considerable popularity among the students.

The history itself concentrates on examining the past (aiming at answering the question "how was it there?") while public history conducts research on how the knowledge about the past is present in the social consciousness and how it is (and may be) instilled in this consciousness, with the central question of "what do (did/will) the people know about how it was?" It focuses on the historical memory, which is rather marginal in the "traditional" history research. The courses from the public history program concentrate on the ways of shaping the historical consciousness (or collective memory) - both in the context of its theoretical framework and mechanism (including e.g. politics of history) and in various practical ways (tools/techniques) of influencing this memory and consciousness, starting from collecting and processing the testimonies of the past, through speech-writing and preparing other texts promoting the historical knowledge,... Logic, Master’s Program

Logic is traditionally defined as the study of formal aspects of valid reasoning, but today many logicians see logic as a more general study of formal systems and their applications. The conceptual frameworks and tools developed by pure research in modern logic have found many applications in diverse disciplines studying formal languages and systems, e.g., software engineering and computational linguistics.

As an academic subject logic is genuinely interdisciplinary and located on the border between Philosophy, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Linguistics. The exchange is active and mutually beneficial. Logic is nowadays an active international area of study and research also in mathematics, computer science, and linguistics.

It offers courses in contemporary analytic philosophy and in the history of philosophy, ancient and medieval, which are designed to complement each other. Its focus is on theoretical philosophy and its history - especially on metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. It has a strong thematic unity; the topic of the 2017-8 Master is time - the metaphysics of time, temporal consciousness, the logic and linguistics of time, the philosophy of history, the nature of narratives, time and social ontology. It requires students to submit regular written work, to produce research papers and to develop their discussion skills in class. It offers courses in philosophy for up to at least 105 ECTS. ... [-]

The Master’s in Ancient and Medival Mediterranean Worlds offers an in-depth examination both of the city of Rome and its role as the capital of the Roman Empire, and of the representation of the ‘idea' of Rome throughout the centuries. Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean Worlds presents a unique programme that focuses as much on the transition between ancient and medieval history as on those periods themselves. A group of specialists from the fields of ancient and medieval history teach this specialisation. Their expertise also includes the status of Rome beyond the Middle Ages into the Renaissance and modern times as well.

The general courses

Historiography and TheoryThis course offers in-depth analysis of both the city of Rome and its role as the capital of the Roman Empire, and of the ‘idea’ of Rome throughout the centuries, embracing both the old and New or Second Rome, Constantinople. This course provides a historiographical overview of the ways in which different aspects of Rome appealed to the imagination of rulers and writers throughout history, starting from Mussolini in the 20th century and going back to the first emperor of the Roman Empire, Augustus. Research Seminar ER: The Eternal Fall of RomeIn this course, we will explore the long life of the apocalyptic vision of the fall of Rome, from Antiquity through the Middle Ages to modern times. We will specifically focus on the mechanisms that are at play when past narratives are employed for contemporary aims. Research Seminar ER:... [-]
