The contemporary world has been introduced to the idea that history and its research should be treated with respect merged with some skepticism. History is a study of the past; it often seeks to discover patterns of cause and effect that can objectively determine events of the past. Scholars mostly use narrative to analyze and unravel the events of the past. At the same time, the narrative method leads to a problem, controversial with the objectiveness, which historical science claims to have. The problem is that history is always written in the context of the time contemporary to the narrator. If you are interested in these issues surrounding the study of history, then a Master in History is an excellent first step into the professional field.

To leave the philosophical questions aside, History assists many fields of knowledge, for example Medieval Studies, International History, World History and Cultural Heritage. These are also examples of specialization areas that students can choose with a Master in History program. Some of the combined elements that almost any Master in History program consists of are cultural, demographic, intellectual, economic and political facts and bonds that tie up the historical narrative and provide a holistic picture of the matter. Library and archive work is greatly involved, as well as renowned deductive methods that will turn your Master in History degree into a real adventure along the path of the past.

Why choose this program?

Is the world moving closer together or is it drifting apart? History as a discipline has been increasingly reaching out beyond the limits of the nation-state in order to study this question. This new program challenges its students to explore international and transnational processes, institutions and movements from multiple perspectives.

Building on the broad range of thematic competences present at Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History and the inspiring environment provided by the University of Oslo and the city, students are encouraged to study the forces that connect and separate people across national borders.

By focusing on international and transnational history from the mid-19th century to the recent past, the program offers a broad and global historical perspective on political, cultural, social and economic processes both between and beyond nation-states. It includes a combination of closely integrated core and specialized courses. Over the first three semesters, students will be thoroughly prepared to write their final master's thesis through a practically oriented “horizontal” course module.... [-]

Public History

The public history program is addressed to all the BA graduates, not only in history, and even not only in the humanities, who would like to conduct the research about and promote the public uses of history. Public history has been operating since the 1970s as a subdiscipline of history, but also as a separate academic discipline. It is called the history "for the people, by the people, with the people, of the people" and deals with all the aspects of history outside the formal education (also academic education). It operates for many years at the universities worldwide and enjoys considerable popularity among the students.

The history itself concentrates on examining the past (aiming at answering the question "how was it there?") while public history conducts research on how the knowledge about the past is present in the social consciousness and how it is (and may be) instilled in this consciousness, with the central question of "what do (did/will) the people know about how it was?" It focuses on the historical memory, which is rather marginal in the "traditional" history research. The courses from the public history program concentrate on the ways of shaping the historical consciousness (or collective memory) - both in the context of its theoretical framework and mechanism (including e.g. politics of history) and in various practical ways (tools/techniques) of influencing this memory and consciousness, starting from collecting and processing the testimonies of the past, through speech-writing and preparing other texts promoting the historical knowledge,... Master in History with a specialisation in Global History and International Relations

Why choose History in Rotterdam?

The Master History is an interdisciplinary programme: we combine knowledge and theories from both the humanities and the social sciences to analyse complex historical issues. An international and comparative approach teaches us to identify similarities and differences in historical case studies.

The international track of the Master History is titled ‘Global History and International Relations’. In this programme, two otherwise independent fields of study are combined to analyse international relations from a historical and global perspective. We focus for example on the rise and fall of great powers such as the British Empire and the United States. We discuss the historical backgrounds of contemporary geopolitical issues and show how the past itself is mobilized by groups and individuals to legitimize policies and to construct identities.... About the Programme

A large part of historical studies is conducted as applied research. Using and interpreting historical data enables historian to construct "usable pasts" as a tool for understanding the present and imagining possible and alternative avenues of future development. Applied history embraces methods and practices dealing with identification, preservation, interpretation, and presentation of historical artefacts, texts, structures, and landscapes. In one part of our training, we focus on material objects in history and their meanings within the framework of heritage and memory studies. The other part of the training will encompass a critical approach to the politics of circulation of historically formed discourses of identity and legitimacy in present-day society. The two-pronged approach to the complex problem of historical legacy and heritage will fill out the gap in professional training in history and provide a platform for creating interactive processes that link the historical object, the historian, and the public.... Global Cultures Curriculum is intended to be a radically new approach to the humanities. Students are invited to critically analyse the “shock of the global” that is shaping our lives and societies and to abandon the traditional Eurocentric and state-centred approaches and methodologies. Hybridisation among methods and research fields, experimentation of new forms of interaction between academics and students, and a strong emphasis on cross-cultural and transnational connections are all essential elements for a new critical perspective in the study of past and present academic discourse.

The two-year, part-time Master Study Program in Oral History and Contemporary History is intended for students interested in contemporary (European) history, in interviewing methodologies and in interpretative methods. Its main aim is to train students to conduct research through creating and analyzing interviews and developing fieldwork projects to address those historical and contemporary issues that require interdisciplinary investigation.

The Master is divided into two sections, the first covers contemporary (Czech and international) history and events, the second is methodological and focuses on various interviewing techniques through which we can study contemporary history. It binds together two general approaches to studying history, the macro, and micro approaches, and enables a thorough understanding of recent events in history. One of the specific strengths and an internationally recognized expertize of the gender studies program at School of Humanities is the emphasis put on analysis and reflection of post-socialist experiences and reflections of gender structuring of the late-socialist Czechoslovak society, and “East European” societies in general....
