If you are looking for a top-notch masters degree program in geology and at the same time be interested in practical applications on the environmental field, then a masters program in Geoscience might be the appropriate program for you.
A masters program in Geoscience is not just a masters in geology degree. It combines both expertise in theoretical areas of geology and technical expertise in geochemistry, hydrogeology, engineering geology, and geophysics. This program prepares a student to tackle a wide range of both practical and pressing environmental problems, in the field where you can make a real and practical difference.
A masters program in Geoscience is applicable in places where the following environmental challenges occur: Soil and water contamination; Waste disposal; Human-induced natural disasters like landslides and floods; and the need for extraction methods for environmentally safe energy.
A student of the program can focus on any of the above fields in geoscience that interests them the most. Some of the available areas for specialization include: hydrogeology, engineering geology, and environmental geology. The program is offered either full-time or part-time. The masters degree in Geoscience program provides academic foundation for licensure as a professional Geologist.
Environmental Geosciences graduates will gain the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge of Earth sciences, specifically in the field of geology, environmental geochemistry (e.g., environmental contamination), environmental hydrogeology and paleoecology (e.g., global climate development). Master's Programme in Geoecology
The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umeå University offers a 2-year Master of Science Programme for students that would like to specialize in Geoecology. Geoecology integrates the fields of Geosciences and Ecology. With an emphasis on the Nordic landscape, you will study natural earth processes, climate change and the effects of anthropogenic impact, such as resource utilization and pollution. These processes result in a more dynamic environment than what is generally recognized, and you will develop an awareness of environmental changes on timescales from years to millennia.
InstructionThe Study Programme starts with a field course, Field Methods in Geoecology. After that, you will have opportunities to take theoretical courses and applied courses directed towards field studies, as well as courses directed towards Geographic Information Systems. The programme is very flexible, as the only compulsory courses are the first course, Field methods in Geoecology, 15 ETCS, and the final Degree thesis, 30 ECTS. Courses can otherwise be chosen freely, as long as the requirements for the M.Sc. degree are met.... [-]
The main goal of the Geosciences course intends to give advanced training in classic and emergent domains of geosciences. It is expected that this master could provide professionals with competencies to work in different areas of geosciences. [+]

Master in Hydrogeology and Environmental Geoscience (M.Sc.)
International Master programme held in English: The course aim is to prepare its participants for professional work as hydrogeologists, water resources or environmental experts, in research, consulting or administration in the public or private sector. It qualifies professionals for the groundwater resources and environmental technology sector. The international Master Programme “Hydrogeology and Environmental Geoscience (HEG)“ at the University of Göttingen conveys modern know-how in the fields of integrated water resources management, contaminant transport in the subsurface and groundwater in fractured systems. Special attention is given to practical and quantitative approaches: e.g. saltwater intrusion; usage of alternative water resources (artificial recharge); environmental monitoring and remediation; water pollution control; contaminant treatment technologies; systems, surface and groundwater modelling. Emphasis is placed on water scarcity problems in semi-arid regions and developing countries. The tuition programme is presented by an international experienced and interdisciplinary team of lecturers from universities, private companies, research institutes and governmental institutions. Tuition includes lectures, field/laboratory work and case studies.... [-]
