Which impacts does tourism have on the social, cultural, environmental, and spatial characteristics of an area? How do tourists influence and are influenced by places and cultures? How can tourism geography with its long tradition in researching human's activities, behaviours, and impacts in place, time, and space help in understanding the challenges that contemporary tourism is facing? You will tackle these questions and study the interactions between tourists, visitors, local communities, and the natural, and build environment in detail in the Tourism Geography and Planning track. Tourism is a global phenomenon with important regional and local impacts. Due to a large number of tourist trips and the possible economic influences, tourism development is often seen by policymakers as an important strategy for regional development. As COVID-19 has shown, tourism is a fragile phenomenon: it can suddenly come to a grinding halt leaving communities that rely on tourism without means to sustain their livelihood. Moreover, before COVID-19, tourism had reached a level that threatened that same heritage (both human and natural) on which it depends. The Tourism Geography and Planning track offers critical insights into the role of the tourism sector in such liveability and identity questions. It offers international, place-based, critical, and research-oriented approaches. In line with the teaching and research philosophy at RUG/Campus Fryslân, the track’s approach to tourism is transdisciplinary involving disciplines such as history, anthropology, psychology, spatial planning, and hospitality studies in the curriculum and dialogue with global and local actors in (sustainable) tourism development. Through these theoretical perspectives, you will develop the capacity to understand, analyse, and evaluate complex problems related to (sustainable) tourism development and planning. -

How can tourism and climate adaptation shape our natural surroundings into the flourishing countryside, thriving towns, and booming cities? And how do these landscapes sway our identity and society? Cultural Geography studies the mutual shaping of human societies and our natural surroundings into cultural landscapes. Within this program, you can follow a track on sustainable tourism, or specialize in the governance of climate adaptation. Either way leads to a Master of Science degree. -

In the master's in Economic Geography, you will learn to understand these region-specific socio-economic development paths. We focus on the actions of people and firms and how they govern regional economic development: where do entrepreneurs start their businesses, how do firms grow, where do people live, where do they move to and which jobs do they have? Can we understand their choices? With this information on an individual level, you will be able to understand regional developments and formulate policy avenues to govern such processes locally, nationally and internationally. -

The track, which is part of the Master in Economic Geography and organized in cooperation with the Faculty of Economics and Business, focuses on regional and global competitiveness related to trade and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Trade and FDI importantly govern the interconnectivity between countries and regions and their subsequent economic development. The ongoing fragmentation of value chains - an iPad is manufactured all over the globe - leads to increasing trade between countries and a growing global presence of multinational firms. -

The two-year Research Master's in Spatial Sciences has two key features. First, it allows students maximum scientific freedom to learn and discover. Second, it lets students develop serious scientific research skills. Throughout the programme we take inspiration from Einstein's words: 'I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious'. Research Master students don't have to be extraordinarily talented or gifted. But students need to have a passionate curiosity about people and places. With this driving curiosity, the research master Spatial Sciences is a good choice. -

The ISLANDS programme combines a thorough training in scientific research with a thematic specialization in Islands and Sustainability. It also provides multi-faceted training of research skills for social science and environmental research, including Individual Research Training by senior staff and training to work in a multi- and interdisciplinary research group. ISLANDS students will be required to study at the University of Groningen in the first semester and the first half of the second semester of the first year of the programme. Then they study at one of the island-based universities of the consortium where they undertake a Research Internship Module. After returning to Groningen, students will again go to an island-based university to undertake their Master's thesis project in the second semester of the second year. ISLANDS graduates receive a double degree from the University of Groningen (including an acknowledgement that this is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master degree involving all partner universities) and the island-based University. The ISLANDS programme builds on the existing Research Master in Spatial Sciences programme at the University of Groningen (RUG). -
