International Masters Program in Palaeobiology

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg FAU
Campus Full time 2 years October 2018 Germany Nuremberg Erlangen + 1 more

The acute theme of global climate change and its impact on organisms and ecosystems requires a new generation of scientists. We provide theoretical concepts of macroecology and macroevolution, as well as statistical techniques and scientific programming in palaeobiology. The second pillar of this specialization is the reconstruction of fossil environments and their local and global controls. We focus on carbonate systems, which are the result of the metabolic activity of organisms and thus reflect the interplay of the biosphere and the earth-system at large. [+]

Master's Program in Integrated Climate System Sciences

The English-language MSc in Integrated Climate System Sciences (ICSS) combines elements of the atmospheric, hydrospheric, cryospheric and biospheric natural sciences with those of economics and the social sciences. The program has an internationally unique focus on physics and modeling and offers three areas of specialization:

physics of the climate system biogeochemistry of the climate system climate-related economics and social sciences

The ICSS program is research oriented and imparts knowledge of and skills in climate research. A solid background in climate physics prepares students for careers in an interdisciplinary field of science, requiring the ability to communicate with colleagues from different disciplines, to apply a diverse range of methods from various subject areas to climate-related research questions, as well as the ability to generate, interpret and combine scientific results.... Sustainable development is one of the major social challenges facing the twenty-first century - this much is beyond dispute. Yet, it still remains unclear in which direction, within which social and ecological framework, and by means of which strategy sustainable development can move forward. These questions form the starting point of our inter- and transdisciplinary research-oriented, and problem-focused Master's programme Sustainability Science.

CONTENT AND IDEA

A distinctive feature of the Sustainability Sciences programme is its balance between sustainable natural sciences and sustainable humanities. Our goal is to look at social-ecological systems in an academically grounded and interdisciplinary manner. We will examine the processes which form the material and energetic basis for environmental sustainability problems as well as potential practical solutions from the perspective of sustainable natural sciences. In complex social-ecological systems, s these material processes are closely interconnected with economic, juridical, political, and cultural contexts as well as with strategies and practices of important social actors. These immaterial prerequisites and conditions of environmental sustainability problems and the way these problems are addressed are the subject of sustainable humanities.... [-]
