The School offers a two-year Master’s program with both M.A. and M.Sc. degrees in Environmental Studies. The School welcomes students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, who are habitually curious, share a passion for environmental leadership and an aptitude for learning. All Master’s students are required to obtain at least 48 credits spread over 4 semesters, with a summer internship during the vacation between the first and second year and a dissertation in the last semester. M.A. or M.Sc. degrees are awarded based on the student’s undergraduate degree and selected elective courses.
The Marine Science (MarS) Program takes advantage of KAUST’s location on the Red Sea, a living laboratory with great potential for exciting science. The program addresses the biology and ecology of the multitude of marine life forms. There is an intentional focus on the local Red Sea system, both as a primary study system and as a system with which general concepts from other marine systems can be compared.
This division conducts, on the basis of physics, chemistry and biology and their interdisciplinary field, cutting-edge studies on the structure and variation mechanisms of the environment and ecosystems in coastal waters and their related environmental issues, and pollution and toxic effects of hazardous chemicals on a regional and a global scale.
This course is constructed and delivered with a focus on experiential learning with chosen sites serving as labs. The students develop a contextual framework by extracting and extrapolating from real-time engagement in a specific place with a specific context. In these sites, an exploration is about a hands-on engagement with people and their lives, local flora and fauna and the land itself.
The MPhil programme aims to train postgraduate students to conduct independent research in Atmospheric Environmental Science. Submission and successful defence of a thesis based on original research are required.
