In the Master’s Programme in English Studies at the University of Helsinki, you develop your expertise in areas that are often separated in other programmes: English language and linguistics, literature in English and the teaching of English. You can take courses in all three areas or just focus on one of them.

The two-year study programme includes the study of literature (e.g. Contemporary American Literature, Old and Middle English Literature) and linguistics (e.g. Syntax, Text Analysis and Pragmatics, Stylistics, Historical Grammar, English Dialects).

Poetry is, quite simply, the activity for which Queen’s University is best known around the world. Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney was both a student and lecturer here at Queen’s, and other famous poet-alumni of the university include Ciaran Carson, Paul Muldoon and Medbh McGuckian. Heaney was a founding member of the famous ‘Belfast Group’ in the 1960s, a forum in which young poets came together with critics to discuss their work and the craft of good poetry more generally. The fruitful interaction of creative and critical activity is at the heart of what this unique MA offers.

The MA in English Literature and Culture is an academic humanities degree with a socially relevant focus. We offer you academic excellence with transferable skills, with the resources of a large research university but with small classes (typically 10-15 students), in a friendly ambiance that contributes to our positive student feedback. Our staff has received their doctorates from a mix of Dutch universities and international institutions (Oxford, Cambridge, Toronto, Edinburgh).

The inter-university master's degree includes internships in companies, specializes in language, literature and culture of English-speaking countries, in the relationship between English and new information technologies, and in cultural mediation to facilitate communication in areas such as educational, legal and administrative.

This program, taught entirely in English and aimed at international applicants, seeks to provide an opportunity to study English from a variety of literary and linguistic perspectives. The degree consists of coursework and a research thesis.

The special track in Linguistics provides students with an in-depth foundation in contemporary trends of linguistics, linguistic, and cross-linguistic research methods. The focus is on training autonomous linguists being capable of creatively addressing language use-related issues and being able to use the acquired linguistic competences in their research and/or teaching career at educational and/or research institutions.

In this program, students become proficient in understanding and producing academic and media-oriented publications in the fields of English literature, socio-cultural history of the English language-based cultures (especially Great Britain, Ireland, Canada and Australia), applied and theoretical linguistics, mediating in English and their native language in specialised cultural, economic and political areas, teaching and transmitting knowledge concerning English literature and linguistics, and English language-based cultures and societies.

The Master in World Literature enables students to gain a broad acquaintance with a gamut of literature across genres from around the world, transitions in the field of literary studies, literary and cultural texts, theories, and methodologies of study as well as undertake coursework with specific, closely defined topics on a variety of literature and cultures and through a variety of materials.

This MA programme aims to provide students with a comprehensive and critical understanding of the theory and practice of English in educational and professional contexts.

The objective of this two-year program (120 credits) is to train specialists in three areas: English Literature and Culture, English Applied Linguistics, Society and Culture of English-Speaking Countries.

The goal of the degree program is to train experts in the field of English Studies who have sound theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge of the English language and can apply such knowledge in practice. In the Master of English Linguistics and Literature, you explore the English language in its full richness and complexity, studying its linguistics and literature, and deepening your understanding of its history and of the cultural diversity of the English-speaking world. Through the program's optional component, you can also study linguistics and literature from a broader European perspective. You will develop a sound theoretical and methodological background while researching linguistic and literary topics leading to a master’s thesis.
