Program Background

The concept of the German “Energiewende” – literally, energy transition – has gained international attention. It includes a variety of measures that aim at making Europe’s largest economy free of fossil fuels and nuclear energy. In order to attain this, all areas of energy production and consumption will have to go through a transition process. Besides mobility and industry, buildings are therefore one of the key factors for a successful Energiewende.

Most of all, this implies re-directing from a mainly fossil-fueled energy supply towards renewable energies and a much more energy-efficient use of energy in buildings and urban areas. This is one of the largest and most urgent challenges of current urban development and other social disciplines.... [-]

IMAT is a dual-degree program managed jointly by APU and the Institute of Applied Material Flow Management (IFaS), an innovative research institute of the Trier University of Applied Sciences (Germany). Students will spend their first year studying at APU and the second year at the Zero-Emission Campus Birkenfeld in Germany.

The program offers integrated knowledge in engineering, economics, law and natural and social sciences. In addition to the learning goals of APU’s Sustainability Science division, IMAT offers multidisciplinary courses to prepare students to become young professionals in zero emission systems design with profound knowledge in renewable energy, integrated water resource management, and other sustainable community development areas. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct fieldwork in Japan and participate in an internship in Germany. IMAT students will have to submit a master’s thesis to IfaS in Germany. A concise summary of this thesis is to be submitted to APU in the form of a research report. Upon completion of the program, students receive two master’s degrees, a Master of Science in International Cooperation Policy (from APU) and a Master of Engineering in International Material Flow Management (from Trier University of Applied Sciences).... The Master’s program is run as a joint degree program by Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences together with the Universidad de La Coruña/Spain. The first semester is taught at the University of La Coruña and the second semester at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. The third semester is a traineeship semester at one of the two named universities or at other participating universities or in companies/institutions.

The objective of the program is to acquire fundamental professional knowledge and the ability to work independently in accordance with scientific methods, to master the varied demands of working life in applied practice, research or teaching, and to deal effectively with the frequently changing tasks that arise in the professional life of an engineer working in water management. On the Master’s program in Water Engineering, graduates acquire expertise in the fields of national and international water management planning processes, in drinking water supply and wastewater disposal, hydrology, hydraulic engineering and experimental hydraulics, in restoration ecology and in biotechnology and river morphology, as well as flow and process modeling.... The objective of the Master’s programme in Energy-Efficient Construction is to convey fundamental knowledge covering potential areas for energy saving, thermal insulation for construction, regenerative thermal supply and cost-effectiveness. Students are equipped with the skills for planning and constructing energy-efficient and passive buildings as well as carrying out renovations of existing structures to the highest level of energy efficiency.
