Its objective is to give a deep understanding of the complexity of the current energy transformations in Europe and worldwide. The programme takes place in Berlin and Nice. The programme offers a unique, multidisciplinary approach which distinguishes it from other Master’s courses in the field of energy studies: It analyses the links between the different levels of energy governance, from an international to a local level, offering problem-focused learning at the crossroads of theory and practice. The one-year programme stretches over four terms and takes place in two study locations: Nice and Berlin Students who successfully complete the programme acquire 90 ECTS credits. The programme is structured into four terms: The first term (October-December) in Nice encompasses classes on the basics of the four energy modules: International energy governance, Economic energy governance, the EU energy governance and Energy and territories. Each module is complemented by seminars dealing with current energy issues. An academic or professional expert is invited for each event. For their second term (January-March) students move on to Berlin where teaching in the four modules continues in the form of workshops. Each module organises a half-day workshop with an expert. Students prepare the workshops in group work delivering papers on themes linked to the topic of the seminar (climate negotiations, energy stock exchange, the role of the EU interconnections in the European energy market, the EU funds and the territorial energy policy). To better understand the local energy challenges in the framework of the German Energy Transition Field, visits will also be organised in co-operation with local institutions and companies. Another focus of this term will be put on the methodology classes, one dedicated to the research work and the Master’s thesis, the second one to project management. In April students return to Nice. The third term (April-June) aims at deepening their knowledge on the four energy modules. A special focus is also given to the methodological support for the students’ work on their thesis including individual meetings with the academic supervisors. In the two simulations the participants will forge their negotiation techniques with regard to the construction of wind farms at local level and work out of a strategy for an international energy cooperation. Written and oral exams in June will conclude this term. From July to August students will work on their Master’s thesis. All along the summer, supervisors will be at their disposal to follow up their work. The defence of the students’ Master’s thesis will take place in Nice in mid-September. Objectives The aim of the European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management is to provide postgraduate students with the skills required for employment in the Sustainable Energy industry. Students will specialise in business case analysis, modelling,project design and implementation. As a result of the foreign contact the course requires, our students will have the international outlook essential to the industry HR needs. By structuring the course in three sections, students are guaranteed to spend time in at least two different EU countries and make contact with a wide range of European institutes and companies involved in the sustainable energy sector. The participating universities are all well-established in training and the education sector as well as being recognised at an international level for their work in the field of sustainable energy system management. Structure The course is divided into three sections. In the first semester(September/October to January), students acquire a solid foundation in systems management. In the second semester (February to June), they specialise in a chosen topic at a different university. At the end of the course, students complete a six-month practical or research project. The entire programme is run on a modular basis with credits awarded for passing each section and the successful completion of the project. A total of 90 ECTS credits (30 for each section of the course) are required with a satisfactory level of achievement in all the sections to obtain the European Master degree. The core provides a solid foundation in systems management with legal, environmental, economic,social and technical aspects. Future environmental change and the effectiveness of solutions are both uncertain. We teach students to integrate risk assessment into decision-making. The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical and research experience. MSc students develop into rounded, self-reflective learners who can work with others with confidence and clarity. Successful completion of the programme MSc Sustainability and Adaptation at the Centre for Alternative Technology leads to the award of Master of Science (MSc) by UEL. The topics covered in the masters degree programme include: environmental politics and transformational change new economics systems sustainable building design, renovation and energy flows in buildings, land use and ecosystem services, waste management, water security and food security, acute resilience pathways for cities, communities and buildings, media and communication, energy provision (including renewable energy), sustainable materials and resources, logistics and transportation, environmental assessment, risk and vulnerability assessment, adaptive capacity, sustainability thinking, adaptation transformation planning Sustainability and Adaptation: Entry Requirements The Sustainability and Adaptation courses are intended to cater for a broad range of interests. For acceptance onto the programme the following requirements apply: Bachelor's degree. Students who do not possess formal qualifications but who can demonstrate that they have gained appropriate knowledge and skills equivalent to degree standard and that they will benefit from and contribute to the programme, may be accepted. Students may be admitted with advanced standing through the recognition of credit or the accreditation of experiential or certificated learning according to the University of East London Accreditation of (Experiential) Learning (A(E)L) policy. A student may gain admission to a programme, with advanced standing, with up to half of the credits associated with the award being achieved through accredited experiential learning, or up two thirds through accredited certificated learning. (Where a combination of experiential and certificated learning is involved up to one half of the credits for the award may be achieved through accredited experiential learning with further credits being achieved through accredited certificated learning up to a maximum of two thirds of the credits for the award). Students that apply to enter stages of the programme may be admitted through normal Accreditation of Experiential Learning (AEL) or Accreditation of Certificated Learning (ACL) processes, or through an approved articulation agreement. Therefore such applicants must be able to demonstrate and evidence that they have the required learning outcomes as listed in the modules for which they are seeking exemption.
