The 12 month MArch Sustainable Urban Design course focuses on the design of urban areas and cities and is a research and project-based programme. The course is designed to enhance the quality of our cities by bringing innovative design into a new relationship with the latest theoretical research on the special structure of urban form in order to respond to the major opportunities and challenges. The programme covers urban regeneration issues, public realm design, urban design theory and practice and sustainable urbanism theory and applications in place-making with advanced technology and design tools. You will be aquire knowledge and develop the skills necessary to face the contemporary cultural, historical, social, economic and environmental challenges in terms of achieving sustainability in those realms. You will be encouraged to develop your problem-solving skills through creative urban design proposals. You will be provided with an understanding of the complex relationship between spatial and design issues and social and economic urban processes. It addresses urban design as a mode of research and practice that shapes urban environments, physical or not and responds to urban issues. You will develop the mechanicsms and design tools which when effectively implemented can secure and deliver projects for the long-term benefit of a city and its people. Key facts As part of its remit, the Department of Architecture and Built Environment aims to develop your vocational skills and the environmentally responsible attitude necessary in today's rapidly changing world. The department enjoys strong collaborative links with overseas institutions. You may have the opportunity to attend conferences, seminars and training courses both in the UK and abroad. The Institute of Urban Planning was one of the first institutes in the country to offer research and postgraduate qualifications in urban design. The MArch Sustainable Urban Design course is suitable for architecture graduates. This course does not convey professional accreditation in the UK. Presessional English for Academic Purposes The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) runs a 5-week Built Environment English language and study skills course. This course is designed in collaboration with the Department of Architecture and Built Environment to prepare students going onto Architecture and Built Environment programmes. If you are close to the English language level you need to go on to your MSc course and you meet the entry requirements for the relevant CELE course, you may be eligible for a joint offer. This means that: you only need one TIER 4 visa and CAS you take a 10 or 5-week English Language and Academic Skills preparation course, and then go onto your MSc course you have a guaranteed place on the MSc course your progression to the MSc is automatic, provided you attend and complete all the coursework Course details Through its content, this course aims to: bridge the gap between architecture and planning establish a broad theoretical basis of debate encourage design experimentation and creativity apply theory and research methods to specific projects be environmentally aware and supportive to sustainable practices The course emphasises the importance of design creativity, in keeping with the spirit of intellectual freedom, wit and experimental urge, which has given the Department of Architecture and Built Environment its international reputation. Urban design depends heavily upon imagination, experimentation, and taking the risk of pushing the envelope far beyond the limitations of current thinking and contemporary practice. You will spend the summer semester producing a supervised design thesis or dissertation. This will be an opportunitiy to conduct a piecce of independant research and undertake a major urban design process. The programme offers a combination of design modules, lectures and seminars which you will need to work in small groups or invidually. The lectures and seminars discuss key issues of urban design history, theory and practice, particularly in relation to sustainable context in both theoretical and practical aspects. Objectives The aim of the European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management is to provide postgraduate students with the skills required for employment in the Sustainable Energy industry. Students will specialise in business case analysis, modelling,project design and implementation. As a result of the foreign contact the course requires, our students will have the international outlook essential to the industry HR needs. By structuring the course in three sections, students are guaranteed to spend time in at least two different EU countries and make contact with a wide range of European institutes and companies involved in the sustainable energy sector. The participating universities are all well-established in training and the education sector as well as being recognised at an international level for their work in the field of sustainable energy system management. Structure The course is divided into three sections. In the first semester(September/October to January), students acquire a solid foundation in systems management. In the second semester (February to June), they specialise in a chosen topic at a different university. At the end of the course, students complete a six-month practical or research project. The entire programme is run on a modular basis with credits awarded for passing each section and the successful completion of the project. A total of 90 ECTS credits (30 for each section of the course) are required with a satisfactory level of achievement in all the sections to obtain the European Master degree. The core provides a solid foundation in systems management with legal, environmental, economic,social and technical aspects. Theoretical courses which also examine the socioeconomic issues surrounding the deployment of these technologies are supported by laboratory workshops. The studies for the core will be done in English. The student can choose one of the following: Hanze UAS, The Netherlands for the core taught in English Università di Pisa, Italy for the core taught in English The Core providers all teach these subjects: Systems management with legal, environmental, economic, social and technical aspects System integration and planning Modelling Scenario development Strategic decision-making Communication Each University has its own teaching methods - distribution of modules can be organised differently - nevertheless we ensure that at the end of the core semester all SESyM students have the same understanding and the same knowledge of systems management, enabling them to follow any of the offered specialisations. 30 ECTS credits will be awarded for passing the core semester following harmonised learning outcomes. A specialisation focused on a particular topic selected from: system integration and optimisation or sustainable energy management. Specialisations are all taught in English. Participating universities are willing to provide the above-mentioned specialisations. However, their effective realisation will depend on the final number of students who register. Normally, this decision is taken at the end of July. Students whose specialisation is cancelled will be offered a suitable alternative. The specialisation sections run from February to the end of May or June depending on the specialisation. The student specialises in one of the following: System Integration and Optimisation – taught at Hanze UAS Sustainable Energy Management – taught at the University of Zaragoza Upon completion of the specialisation, the student gains practical or research experience through a project undertaken in an industry, a research laboratory or at the university. A wide variety of projects can be proposed and it gives flexibility to the student and the project provider to define the project. The student is welcome to propose his/her own project. EUREC and the course directors continuously contact renewable energy companies throughout the year to encourage them to propose a student project.
