Learning and living the Mediterranean The "Mediterranean studies" branch of the Master in Advanced European and International Studies (MAEIS) is targeted at students who have completed their undergraduate studies. Its objective is to give students an overarching,encompassing vision of the political, social, economic, and cultural challenges of today’s world. The Master’s programme follows an original approach which distinguishes it from other Master’s courses in Euro-­Mediterranean Studies and International Relations: The MAEIS is an international, interdisciplinary and itinerant programme which aims to educate the next generation of Euro­Mediterranean decision­makers. Following the slogan “Learning and living the Mediterranean”, the participants rotate each trimester,moving their place of studies from Nice to Tunis and then to Rome. The MAEIS is a one -year ­programme, subdivided into three terms. Degree and recognition Students who successfully complete the programme are awarded two certifications at the end of the academic year: Master in Advanced European and International Studies: This is the diploma of CIFE, certifying the successful completion of the academic curriculum and granting 60 ECTS credits at Master level. The degree qualification Chargé de Mission en Organisations Européennes et Internationales (Policy Officer in European and International Organisations): This qualification is recognised by the French state as a degree at Master level (level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework EQF). In the last two decades Mediterranean societies have been significantly affected by inter­group violence and inter­state conflicts: from the Western Balkans to Cyprus, from Israel to Palestine, from Libya to Syria. Sustainable Development and Globalisation The 21st century and especially the Mediterranean face unprecedented economic, environmental and social challenges, as the globalised economic development exerts increased pressure on limited resources, deteriorates the environment and creates growing inequalities. Regional Integration and Transformation The EU has become a role model of regional integration. How is the dynamic architecture of European institutions, including European Neighbourhood Policy, functioning? To what extent do the Arab League or the Union for the Mediterranean follow a similar logic of regional integration? How can we explain the intraregional differences in the Southern Mediterranean since the Arab Spring? Mediterranean Politics and Societies Migration, Gender, and Youth are policy fields that all Mediterranean Societies have in common, but approach differently. At the crossroads of theory and practice, this policy oriented module proposes solutions to the historical, social and cultural challenges Mediterranean societies face today. Project Management This module equips the participants with the professional skills and competences that will enable them to work in the field of Euro­Mediterranean cooperation. They will participate in negotiation and mediation trainings, simulation games and follow workshopon project cycle management and intercultural communication. Overview of the academic year The first term (October to December) starts in the European Union, in Nice, France. It encompasses classes on the basics of the five teaching modules. Studying in France helps students to analyse the Euro­-Mediterranean relations and regional integration from an EU perspective. The second term (January to March)starts off in Tunis, Tunisia. Experts from the region and of different disciplines will analyse Euro-­Mediterranean challenges in times of transformation and globalisation. A special focus will be put on youth policies in the Mediterranean. Studying in Tunisia will provide the students with a unique experience of a historic democratisation process that turns the country into a role model throughout the MENA region. This part of the programme is organised in co-operation with the Université Internationale de Tunis (UIT) and in co-operation with the Institut de Recherche sur le Maghreb Contemporain (IRMC). The programme concludes (April to July) in Rome, Italy, at our partner university, La Sapienza, and in co-operation with the renowned think tank, the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI).A special focus will be given to Sustainable Development and Climate Action, as well as to Project Management classes. Students will have the opportunity to advance in their research work, as the months of May and June are left at their disposal to work on their thesis. Learning philosophy Implementing African-driven solutions is the new approach to the economic development of the African continent. With this qualification participants will be able to: Use specialised knowledge to develop Africa where it matters Contribute towards sustainable development Implement Africa-driven solutions Shape finance policies and programmes Conduct in-depth research Understand the key role of DFIs and financial institutions Study while you work The MDevF is a 2-year modular programme, which means that you have to attend 3 blocks of 2 weeks each on the USB campus in Bellville, Cape Town. Off-campus you have to complete a research assignment. This enables students from all over South Africa and other countries to attend – even when working full-time. Structure and content Overview Attend 3 blocks spread over 2 years: The MDevF is presented as a modular programme over two years. Students attend three class contact sessions of a fortnight each over a period of two years, and complete a research assignment. Core subjects, electives and research assignment: Students need to do the six core modules, as well as two electives chosen from a list of options. These electives provide areas of specialisation. Students also need to write a research assignment. Course methodology: A mix of highly interactive lectures/course material, case studies and a workshop on financial risk and structure. Handbooks, guidelines, articles, journal materials and a matrix /checklists will serve as reference material for future project design and delivery.
