A masters is earned after students complete an undergraduate degree program. To obtain a masters, you usually need to complete 12 to 18 college courses that often involve completing comprehensive tests and/or a thesis.
Development Studies is a vibrant field concerned with processes of change such as social and economic, political and cultural and the major policy challenges that present the efforts to overcome poverty and insecurity. The program provides a stable interdisciplinary social science formation and develops students’ capacities for independent and critical inquiry.

BIGD has designed the Master of Development Studies (MDS) program to provide an in-depth understanding of development concepts and issues from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. On satisfactory completion of the program, students will be able to approach and analyze development issues in the context of globalization, economic transformation, and social, cultural and political changes.

In the current context of rapid social, economic, technological and environmental changes in Asia, it is imperative to understand the effects of change on various sub-groups: women, men, indigenous peoples, different classes, and other social groups.
The subject of the Master's program "Cultural Policy and Development" is the exploitation and promotion of the culture of both cultural heritage and contemporary artistic creation as well as the culture of everyday life. The Program focuses on highlighting the public value of Culture, particularly in the context of modern challenges.
The Department currently has 52 research students, working on a range of research topics in many parts of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. We are particularly interested in potential research students who wish to work in one of the main Departmental Research Clusters, namely: Labour, Movements and Development; Neoliberalism, Globalisation, and States; Violence, Peace and Development; Water for Africa; Migration, Mobility and Development; Agrarian Change and Development; Development Policy, Aid, Institutions and Poverty Reduction.
Independently designed and curated curriculum that responds to current social issues aligns with service and research opportunities and reflects student interests and latest trends in the field of International Development.
The main aim of the "Population and Development" programme is to train the specialists who will be ready for practical development problems solution. These challenges could be results of rapid changes in social and economic sphere or on the other hand be set by the public administration on different levels to prevent the negative consequences of population changes or to utilize the positive demographic impact.
Japan-Global Development program (JGDP) is a newly established two-year master’s program to provide students the opportunity to learn universal development and growth logic in the fields of politics, economy and management, using Japan’s experiences in economic development and corporate growth as basic case materials. The JGDP was jointly developed by JICA and IUJ under the JICA-DSP.* *JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Development Studies Program (JICA-DSP) ”JICA-DSP” is a program that invites future leaders from partner countries to Japan to complete master’s or doctor’s degrees at Japanese graduate schools, where they learn about Japan’s experiences with its own modernization and development experience with Japanese development cooperation to other countries. JICA and universities in Japan jointly built and offer the JICA-DSP. Students will not only study in their respective academic fields, but will also learn much from modern Japan’s experience of development, which differs significantly from the history of growth and development found in the West. Students can study the “Japanese experience” systematically, including even negative ones, so that they may use this knowledge to contribute to the development of their own countries.
