Since humans first began to establish rich social (and societal) ties, there have been struggles for power and a search for the best possible regime in any given time and place. A key question, therefore, becomes whether it is possible to democratize (or decentralize) various (deeply divided) societies without fuelling ethnic, religious, or other conflicts. Brno-based Centre of Prehistoric Archaeology in the Near East (PANE) is a young institution. PANE was founded in 2009 by archaeologist Inna Mateiciucová and cultural anthropologist Maximilian Wilding; building on the archaeological fieldwork of Masaryk University in Syria at the Neolithic site Tell Arbid Abyad, initiated already in 2005 and suspended in 2011. PANE is currently conducting research in Oman and planning a project in Jordan.
