Civil Engineering

The benefits of a Masters extend beyond improving your earning potential. They can provide you with personal and professional skills to accelerate your development. They are also an opportunity to differentiate yourself from your peers, many of whom will have similar A-level and undergraduate qualifications.

A discipline of professional engineering, civil engineering has to do with designing, constructing and maintaining manmade structures such as dams, canals and roads. The term “civil” is used to distinguish this field from military engineering.

Students who complete a part of their degree in Asia are growing in numbers. Currently, the second and the third biggest economies are in Asia. Without limitation, students have described their time in Asia as the best experience of their lives. Today, three of the four most populated countries of the world are in Asia: China, India, and Indonesia.

Masters in Civil Engineering in Asia 2017. The international Master’s in Civil Engineering is a graduate programme (Laurea Magistrale) which aims at educating professionals with the necessary in-depth scientific and technical knowledge in the field of civil engineering. The programme is intended to provide students with firm technical bases while nurturing decision-making and leadership potential. It prepares graduates to practice their profession at an advanced level and with a unique exposure to an international environment to better understand global issues of civil engineering. About the programme: Civil engineering All courses and activities are given in English. The master’s duration is two years (4 semesters). The core modules, common for all students, aim at consolidating fundamentals and improving modelling capabilities in the classical areas of Civil Engineering such as structural mechanics and engineering, hydraulics and hydrology, soil mechanics, road design and transportation. In the second year, students choose a curriculum amongst: Infrastructure design in river basins (Bologna) Structural engineering (Bologna) Off-shore engineering (Ravenna). These will allow students to become skilled in civil-engineering project-management, in design and analysis of civil-engineering structures and infrastructures, providing a comprehensive know how on civil engineering materials, technologies and processes. A Faculty commission will help students selecting the courses to build their own curriculum. In order to obtain the Master Degree (Laurea Magistrale), students must successfully complete all the courses and discuss a final dissertation, for a minimum of 120 Credits (ECTS). The courses will be organized with in-class teaching activities, practice, design and laboratory activities. The final exam consists in the public discussion of a dissertation (the master thesis). Even more international Thanks to Dual Degree agreements, students can obtain two qualifications in two years. The partners are Columbia University (New York, USA); University of Miami (Florida, USA); Université de Liège (Belgium). Furthermore, international agreements allow students to spend part of their studies abroad (for exams, research, or internships). About the curriculum: Infrastructure design in river basins The curriculum “Infrastructure Design in River Basins” focuses on the management of water resources and river basins in a human-impacted environment through: the analysis of the hydrological, geological, geomorphological and socio-economical behavior of the catchment area; the monitoring, understanding and management of surface water and ground water resources, keeping into consideration the impact and feedbacks of human interventions on these systems; the design and management of water systems and hydraulic structures, their characteristics and functioning in relation to other civil engineering infrastructures (such as transportation systems). Students will become able to make appropriate and critical use of methods, techniques and tools necessary for planning the integrated management of water resources and water systems in river basins, for designing engineering structures and infrastructures (aimed at water supply, drainage and defense from water-related risks), together with the accompanying maintenance and operational control practices. Graduates may set to work as advisors, designers or project leaders and take up careers with consultancies, contractors, water utilities, water boards or regulatory bodies, relief agencies and international organisations. In the Master of Disaster Preparedness and Reconstruction you will learn the theory and practice of disaster management, from both disaster preparedness and post disaster reconstruction perspectives. This program, created by experienced professionals, will prepare you with the skills and knowledge to engage in the appropriate disaster management practices accommodating short and long term considerations aimed at building a resilient system. You will engage in practice and form the policies based on informed situational/critical analysis. If you would gain satisfaction from playing a key role in protecting and rebuilding communities from and after traumatic disasters, then the Master of Disaster Preparedness and Reconstruction could be for you. Career Pathways The current trend in disaster events and created a significant domestic and international interest in the disaster management trained professionals. This program specifically address the niche and relatively new market encompassing professionals in government, for profit and not for profit sectors, who engage in or planning to engage in disaster management without a formal qualification in disaster management. With a Master of Disaster Preparedness and Reconstruction you will have unique and specialised disaster management skills to be applied in the disaster management process. As one of the only universities to offer this disaster management degree accommodating multiple discipline backgrounds, the University of Newcastle educates graduates to be immediately valuable to multiple disaster management stakeholder groups including: State, federal and local government non-governmental organisations (NGOs); and private contracting organisations. As a newly developed program, the University of Newcastle will be seeking endorsement by the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) and Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors in 2016. With this accreditation graduates will have an industry recognised qualification, supporting the relevance of the program’s content. Specialisations The Master of Disaster Preparedness and Reconstruction is distinctive in its purpose and content. The key focus of your learning will be disaster preparedness (i.e disaster risk mitigation) and post disaster redevelopment. You will explore and understand the conceptual approaches and operational processes in the context of building disaster resilience. Advancing on the fundamental principles of disaster management, the program will develop necessary skills and knowledge for you to engage in diverse disaster situations. The course is comprised of six core courses and one elective (direct entry into the Masters): Post-disaster Project Management Disaster Mitigation and Sustainable Re-development Professional Practice for Disaster Management Economics of and for Disaster Management Social and Policy Considerations for Disaster Management and Disaster Management Research Project (on a topic of your choice to support your career goals). You need to choose one electives from an comprehensive list of directed courses that focus on construction project management, business management, environmental management and social change and capacity building.
