Master-level studies involve specialized study in a field of research or an area of professional practice. Earning a master’s degree demonstrates a higher level of mastery of the subject. Earning a master’s degree can take anywhere from a year to three or four years. Before you can graduate, you usually must write and defend a thesis, a long paper that is the culmination of your specialized research.

Chemistry is a category of physical science that deals with the structure, composition, and various properties of matter. Some topics which chemistry aims to cover include the formation of chemical bonds, properties of atoms, and the intermolecular forces responsible for giving matter its unique properties.

Master in Chemistry

Research Degrees: MSc, MPhil, PhD

Background

Chemistry in Aberdeen has been recognised as a subject in its own right since 1793, making this one of the oldest Chemistry Departments in the country.

The Department occupies the Meston Building, adjacent to the medieval centre of the University campus, and is well equipped for research in all branches of Chemistry. The Department's main areas of specialisation are in Materials Chemistry (ceramics, glasses, zeolites, polymers, liquid crystals, catalysts, novel electrical materials), Organic Chemistry, Environmental/Analytical Chemistry and computational Chemistry. Recent appointments have enabled us to strengthen our work in catalysis and surface science environmental and analytical chemistry and organic synthesis. This summer we will open a new laboratory facility which houses the biodiscovery centre.... [-]

Master in Environmental Analytical Chemistry

The MSc programme in Environmental Analytical Chemistry focuses on specialisation in advanced modern analytical methodology to face challenges in environmental, pharmaceutical, oil & gas industry and other related industry in R&D. A particular focus is on the use of NMR and elemental & molecular mass spectrometry for the identification and quantification of small biomolecules in complex mixtures at trace level.

Most biochemical and environmental questions can nowadays only be answered by genetics and metabolomics. Here this course focuses on the latter, i.e. the determination of molecules in biological and environmental samples using spectroscopic and mass spectrometric methods.... [-]
