The knowledge of International law is important to graduates for different reasons: public international law has taken into account the effects of globalization and the necessity of protecting general and common international interests; it is also a reality the importance of the International Community, and in consequence of international relations and foreign trade. The Master in International Law wants to reflect this broader perspective. In order to practice law with enough guarantees, it is necessary for the lawyer to acquire practice knowledge and the correct application of it. This learning mechanism can only be acquired in the Centres which are in actual contact with the main local and international Law Firms. With this simple but at the same time innovative principles, ISDE launches the Master in International Law (International relations and Foreign Trade). Structure The total duration of the programme exceeds 1200 hours. The programme is divided in two phases: The first phase begins in March and ends in June. It takes place at our academic headquarters. The method is based on a combination of study of cases and case study. The study of cases gives students a general approach to the different subjects of the program. At the same time this particular method develops students’ agility for legal reasoning. On the other hand, the case study consists in analyzing, deeply and precisely, those particular aspects which are especially relevant in international legal practice. This combined method aims at providing students with a work method which will allow them to face any kind of legal problem in future. This specific programme in International Law is completed by different common subjects that are essential for a lawyer and paying special attention to the International relations and Foreign Trade. The second phase begins in July and ends in November. Each student completes this phase at the premises of one of the collaborating entities of the Master, under the conditions and rules set by those entities. For this reason, the schedule for the Second Phase is subject to further modifications. Location and calendar The first phase of the Master in International Law Trade & International Relations. takes place in our Academic Headquarters in Barcelona. The students are obliged to attend lectures everyday plus the additional classes that can take place during also the mornings. The students shall take practical cases and exams related to the classes they have each week. Furthermore, the students could visit different departments of the top law firms in Spain and other institutions and companies. These legal offices and institutions are partners to ISDE. The second phase takes place in the law Firms, institutions or companies that have collaborated in teaching the program in the first phase. ISDE collaborates and works closely with institutions in the following countries: Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Poland, Canada, USA, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Panama, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica, etc. The critera used to appoint the institution that will receive the student consists in a detailed case by case analysis of the academic performance of the student, personal profile, and the previous acceptance from the receiving institution of that particular student. Admission process The selection process developed by ISDE aims to ensure the uniformity of the participants’ level in order to allow them all to perform a similar work rate adapted to the program requirements. First Year of Graduated Studies: The first year of Graduate Studies (Diplôme Universitaire), MMEF - Mathematical Methods in Economics and Finance, is a one-year, full-time, international programme that is taught in English. The courses correspond to those taught in the first year of Graduate Studies, which in the Bologna European Academic System is the first year M1 of the Masters. The courses derive from pre-existing courses at the university, with intensive courses in French. The degree is devoted to the training of students in the use of mathematical models in economics and finance: mathematical economics, strategic analysis, decision theory, stochastic models, mathematical finance and optimization models. The training is built around a large spectrum of courses, which aim to give the knowledge for the modelization of economic and financial problems, for mathematical formalization and tools for the numerical solutions. The new models in finance, economics and decision theory need a coherent training in these fields. Around 50 students are welcomed each year. Admission is made on the basis of academic excellence. All applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English and have a recognized Bachelor Degree or equivalent (180 ECTS credits in the Bologna system). Preference is given to students in economics, finance or mathematics. Mathematical aptitude and work experience can be helpful. Continuation to the QEM Erasmus Mundus Master: After the first year of the MMEF Degree, successful students who want to get a Masters Degree, may apply to: - the QEM1, the first year (QEM1) of The Erasmus Mundus Master course, QEM - Models and Methods of Quantitative Economics; or - the accelerated track that corresponds to a combination of the Summer Semester and second year of the QEM (QEM2).
