Biology

A masters refers to the completion of a graduate study program that prepares students to further their knowledge of a specific subject or advance their careers. The majority of masters are granted by state or public universities.

Biology examines the activity of organisms in the areas of function, growth, and evolution, as well as how these factors affect where the organism lives. It can further study how individual organisms interact within their environment.

Sweden (Sverige) is the largest of the Nordic countries, with a population of about 9.5 million. It borders Norway and Finland and is connected to Denmark via the bridge of Öresund (Öresundsbron). Sweden has a strong tradition of being an open, yet discreet country.

Master's Programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology

Plant biotechnology is becoming increasingly important as a tool to solve some of the global problems related to feed, fuel and ecosystem management in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. The Master of Science Programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology offers students a specialized competence and skills to recognize, understand and find solutions to these challenges. The programme is based upon a set of coordinated courses which together amount to 80 credits (120 ECTS credits) spread over two years. Up-to-date knowledge is provided about plant cell and molecular biology as well as plant growth and development. This is applied in the fields of plant breeding, biotechnology and functional genomics. The programme is organized by the Department of Plant Physiology (Umeå University) and the Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) which together form the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). The education is anchored around the various research topics of UPSC.... [-]

Students graduating from the bachelor program in Marine Science have a broad knowledge about the oceans, including physics of water movement and the chemical processes to the ecosystem structure and function. The system perspective and the experience in interdisciplinary work is a unique competence for the marine graduates. More than 70% of the Earth s surface is covered by the oceans and 40% of the world s population lives closer than 50 km from the coastline. Because the world's marine resources are extensively exploited there is a continuous need to improve management in order to reach a sustainable use of the marine environment. This calls for well educated persons with both broad and specialized knowledge. The master program in Marine Science is an interdisciplinary program that gives the student theoretical and practical tools to improve the conditions in the marine environment in their future work or research activities. Best Masters in Biology in Sweden 2017. The Master's Programme in Genomics and Systems Biology is recommended for students looking for an exciting and interdisciplinary education at the forefront of modern biology. In this program you will study how genomes change over time and how life's molecules interact in networks to build up living organisms. This knowledge about the properties of complete biological systems, and not just their individual parts, is also essential in drug development, treatment of diseases and to improve industrial bioprocesses. Genomics and Systems Biology also opens the way for an understanding of evolution at the molecular level, which has implications for how we assess the adaptability of organisms to changing environmental conditions, such as climate change. Nordic Master's Programme in Biodiversity and Systematics

University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Science
Campus Full time 2 years September 2017 Sweden Gothenburg

The Nordic Masters in Biodiversity and Systematics provides an intellectually challenging learning environment with roots in a research group and a wide range of courses, distributed across the Nordic countries, combining theoretical studies with practical elements. [+]

Biodiversity and Systematics concerns the multitude of organisms living on our planet and the evolutionary relationships among them. Far from all existing organisms have been discovered and described, and among those organisms science knows of, classification is still ambiguous. With molecular tools and morphological and anatomical observations, new species are continuously being identified and their relationship to other organisms is being disentangled. In this programme, students are trained to gain the systematic and taxonomic expertise needed in our society to be able to take action against global loss of biodiversity. The Nordic Masters in Biodiversity and Systematics provides an intellectually challenging learning environment with roots in a research group and a wide range of courses, distributed across the Nordic countries, combining theoretical studies with practical elements. The programme is offered in cooperation with other Nordic universities. [-]

Master's Programme - Animal Science

Farm animals primarily supply us with food and clothing, whilst our sporting and companion animals bring us other benefits. Do you care about the function and health of our animals?

Our domestic animals are of great importance for our society. Farm animals primarily supply us with food and clothing, whilst our sporting and companion animals bring us other benefits. Whatever we expect of our animals, it is important that they both function well and are in good health. We also have to consider the various needs of our society. Through advisory work, education, research and animal husbandry, animal scientists can improve the production and wellbeing of our animals. Within the international collaboration, animal science plays an increasing role when it comes to improving and developing animal husbandry practices. The program has a duration of 2 years and will prepare you for a number of careers, for instance research.... [-]
