Structure of the programme The 1st semester of the Master programme consists of a common core that focuses on fundamental concepts and methods in biology. Particular emphasis is placed on laboratory methods (molecular, chemical), quantitative tools (statistics, modelling, bioinformatics), scientific writing, and ethical aspects. Students also have the opportunity to participate in field excursions (alpine, marine, Mediterranean and tropical ecosystems) or to do internships to obtain workplace experience. The 2nd semester of the Master programme involves course work, mini-research projects and internships in two of the areas of specialization. Students develop a research plan in one of these areas, which forms the basis of their Master thesis during the 2nd year of the programme. The Master thesis research project (60 ECTS) allows students to develop their abilities in critical thinking, their organisational skills, and their intellectual and scientific independence. Masters in Biology. The biological sciences can be defined as the study of living things. In general it covers how all living things from the smallest microorganisms to larger plants and animals live and interact with each other. It tends to focus on the structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution and taxonomy of living things. Study in the area of biological sciences is available in the UK at both the bachelor and master’s level. One of the beauties of pursing this course in the UK is to develop a more specific and personalized subject focus than you would normally be able to do in the US. Studying your degree in the UK will also give you a valuable and unique perspective from your peers. Several of our partner universities also offer work experience with certain companies within their degrees to set you apart and help you gain more experience in your chosen field. At the undergraduate level the biological sciences can be kept as a broad based degree or can be honed to a specialized subject. Some of the focuses within the umbrella degree of biological sciences available at our partner universities include animal biology, microbiology, infectious disease, molecular biology and genetics, plant biology, ecology and cellular biology. Several of our partner universities offer a foundation year which gives general background courses in the subject followed by two to three years of focusing the major into a specialized field. In addition, there are also exciting opportunities to study a fourth year... [-]
