There have been major advances in this field over the last twenty years, as a result of new molecular and cellular biology technologies reaching far beyond the confines of plant transgenics. In this positive context, plant breeding companies and food manufacturing and various non-food manufacturing companies are expressing a growing need for plant breeders who are able to understand and manage increasingly diverse technologies in order to meet more complex and varied objectives. The Graduate Program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering offers research and education opportunities leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is well-equipped for graduate research in aerosol science and engineering, biochemical engineering, computational modeling, fluid mechanics and mixing, fuel cell technology, metabolic engineering and systems biology, nanoparticle technology, polymer processing and characterization, polymer reaction engineering, process control, thermodynamics and transport phenomena, and systems research. The Department maintains a distributed computing network consisting of research laboratories and a PC laboratory. Major research facilities including electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and NMR are coordinated through a variety of laboratories. General Requirements Before graduate courses in Chemical Engineering are attempted, the candidate must fulfill certain minimal course prerequisites either by previous experience or by taking selected undergraduate courses. These minimal prerequisites are descibed in the GPA and prerequisite policy page. Some of these prerequisites may be fulfilled by concurrent registration if necessary. No courses numbered below 400 may count towards the minimal 30 credits required for the degree. A maximum of 6 credits of 400 level courses may count towards the degree subject to prior approval by the Graduate Director. Graduate courses with an EMPM designation cannot be used to satisfy the minimum 30 hours without prior permission of the Graduate Director. All graduate students (full and part-time, on and off campus) are expected to attend all research seminars, i.e., those not specifically directed to 1st year students. Students that fail to regularly attend research seminars will receive a notice from the director of graduate studies; extreme cases can be considered insufficient progress towards degree. Exceptions to this requirement will be made on a case-by-case basis by the graduate program committee; such exceptions include off-campus students that demonstrate regular participation in an on-campus seminar series that takes place at a more convenient time, or an off-campus technical seminar series. Students granted this exception should turn in a list of seminars attended to the director of graduate students before the end of each spring and fall semester. This program is taught in FRENCH. The Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology Master’s Degree offers highly specialized crossdisciplinary training in a vast number of fields in the Life Sciences, from biochemistry to cell biology by way of genetics and molecular biology. Students may choose between four specialised clusters that have been developed and supported by the scientific work of our research laboratories. One of them is offered in collaboration with ULB on the campus at Gosselies. Profile of the programme The Master's Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology provides a state-of-the-art education based on a solid scientific background. What students learn here is put into practice through internships in companies and/or in research labs in Belgium or abroad. The Institute of Biology at UMONS is involved in international research projects in fields like microbiology, cell biology and proteomics. In collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, students in the Master's programme have access to several labs that are world renown in such highly advanced fields as neurobiology, magnetic imaging, molecular biology, to name a few. The master’s thesis is completed during the two years of the programme, starting in the middle of the first year and finishing in the second year. During these two years, students will also have specialised courses to learn how to handle and care for laboratory animals and their welfare. These courses give rise to a certificate that is required to work with animals in laboratories. Special attention is given to learning scientific communication in both French and English thanks to research seminars and "Scientific Workshop Training". Students tailor their own curriculum (2/3 of the programme is electives) to include a great amount of lab work as well as internships in companies or in other academic institutions. Students will follow all steps of research process from the problem statement to the achievement and analysis of experimental results. Master’s Program “Biological engineering” is delivered by an experienced academic staff having a comprehensive background in fundamental research and practical applications in industries. The program is designed with emphasis on practical skills development and students work in the modern and well-equipped SibFU Laboratory of Bioluminescent Biotechnologies (in Russian). This laboratory was established through the collaboration of the world’s strongest team of scientists engaged in fundamental research of light emission by living organisms, i. e. bioluminescence, and the Nobel Laureate Professor Osamu Shimomura. Training Methods: lectures, lab experiments, case studies and group discussions. Teaching staff: SibFU Professors and visiting lecturers from universities of Russia, USA, Italy, China, Spain, UK and other countries. The major part of the Program’s training takes place at the modern and well-equipped SibFU Laboratory of Bioluminescent Biotechnologies, led by Nobel Laureate Professor Osamu Shimomura, in one of the world’s strongest team of scientists engaged in fundamental research of light emission by living organisms, i.e. bioluminescence. Research projects While following the Program students have to deal with the phenomenon of bioluminescence in all its aspects: from genetic and molecular to evolutionary and ecological. Master’s research projects are focused on studying the chemical nature of light emission by new luminous species (fungi, soil worms, coelenterates, bacteria, etc.), modelling the enzyme behavior in cell hyaloplasm, development of new recombinant bioluminescent organisms and of a new generation of bioluminescent biosensors for environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics as well as on other fundamental and applied topics.
