Market The need to train people to work in the yachting sector is based on the rapid and exponential growth recorded by this sector in recent years. This growth has been further encouraged by the issuing of provisions to encourage the development of this market (from simplifying procedures for port construction, to reducing the tax burden on recreational boats over 10 m. etc.). For this reason, the sector shows today a strong professional vocation, with regard both to the skills necessary to the design of recreational boats, their components, and accessories, and to the management of the different stages of the production process. In particular, the sector is going through a stage of strong growth and development in quantitative and economic terms, although full maturity has not yet been reached. This lag is explained partly by the current lack of executives able to manage and direct this phase of change. Course Program A ship, whether sailing boat or motoryacht, is a complex product that integrates several systems for propulsion, living quarters, and various accessory functions. Every decision about one of the technical systems (hull, appendages, interior layout, propulsion, onboard equipment) also affects all the others. A yacht, whether made series or as one-off, calls for many different construction techniques and a variety of materials. Its interior will reflect design language and fashion, while market competition tends to imbue every ship with a certain amount of innovation. The Specializing Master takes this complexity into account and intersperses classroom experience – nine learning modules that outline different disciplinary fields – with design exercises and visits to shipyards and companies active in the industry, as well as to applied research institutes. The principles of each field are explained and students acquire the skills to apply what they have learned in their designs. Their various special abilities are brought together in workgroups that are called upon to develop a series of work projects. Duration The Specializing Master lasts one year and is scheduled to start in February 2017. Classroom training represents a commitment of three to four days per week. Exercises The Specializing Master integrates a variety of learning modules: metaproject analysis, defining the concept, and design exercises carried out in small groups as prerequisites to the planning workshops. The workshops offer a chance to try out the skills acquired during the learning modules, classroom exercises, and trips outside the classroom. The workshops are an essential part of the training process, which also includes visits to research organizations, production facilities, and professional studios. Internship The internship is required, lasts three months, and is carried out at leading design studios and shipyards. The Specializing Master in Color Design and Technology aims to provide advanced training to professionals, so as to enable them to understand and manage the many technological and design issues, often across many disciplinary areas, typical of all those professional and research sectors in which the use and management of color are essential. Examples of such production areas include industrial product design, interior architecture, communication, fashion, entertainment and urban planning. Particular attention will be paid to analyzing and summarizing utilization, control, ideation, organization and planning through the use of color. Consequently, color is not treated as a simple attribute of objects or surfaces, but as a means of expression and design underlying perception and interaction with reality. The Specializing Master consists of two phases. The theory and technique based phase aims to train students in the technical aspects of measurement, control, digital reproduction and comparison relating to disciplines such as physics, optics, colorimetry, chemistry, psychology and perception. The second phase focuses on the methods learned, which will be contextualized and experimented with in different color application and design areas such as interior design, urban spaces, industrial products, fashion and communication. Professional Outcomes The Specializing Master aims to produce an innovative professional figure, widely in demand by the market, with advanced technical and design skills concerning color use and control and color design in research and in several sectors such as interior design, urban planning, industrial product design, fashion design and communication. GameScenes also examines the influence of gaming - both digital and traditional on painting, sculpture, street and graffiti art, performance, visual culture, and sampling/remix culture. During the course of the semester students will experience and discuss art games, machinima, in-game interventions, and performances, site-specific installations, site-relative mods, but also board games, simulations, and toys. Course topics include sexual and political representation, ideology and politics in game-based artworks, Game Art criticism and the interplay between games and Contemporary Art. Through GAME PRODUCTION students will learn the craft of game development through a series of practical exercises. The class explores the elements common to all games that are fundamental for a game designer working in any format, from sports to board games to computer and video games. Students will invest their time in actual design and production, which will be structured and guided by the instructor. This production time will be supplemented by in-class exercises, readings, and discussion, and talks from visiting artists and game developers. Among the topics covered by GAME PRODUCTION are research, pre-production, production, collaboration, and distribution. Choosing the most appropriate language to express a game design idea is just as important as selecting the most effective technology, or the right marketplace. GAME AESTHETICS provides an introduction to aesthetics in contemporary game development, from interaction dynamics to visual style. It explores all aspects of representation in games - from simulation to abstract play, from photo-realism to low-poly art, from digital expressionism to radical punk aesthetics - providing students valuable experience using various languages, strategies, and methods that can be applied to their projects. The instructor will provide useful reference and will assists students in identifying and achieving their unique style. For evaluating the students’ work-in-progress during the year, the Program adopts the art school format of weekly critiques: both a faculty member and students will participate in constructive, direct, and open discussions about the state of their project. A GAME CRITIQUE is meant to promote both the creative environment and the intellectual context for experimentation. Students are encouraged to thoughtfully challenge the prevailing conventions of digital gaming (both in terms of form and content), develop new forms, and become innovators in playable design. GAME CONTEXTS examines the historical and cultural relevance of play, discusses key characteristics of games, surveys the emergent and interdisciplinary approaches to game design. Particular attention is paid to integrating knowledge and design approaches from other creative fields, such as architecture, fashion design, service design, and contemporary art. Pivotal to the module is the process of helping students develop strategies to explore these approaches for the development and production of their own work. Special attention will be devoted to the evolution of game design as a discipline, and how it interacts with constant changes in design and culture altogether. Each week during the semester, the instructor will introduce and discuss a specific game. Students will be required to play the game and contribute to the discussion. The themes explored in class will subsequently be used for development goals. Game creation and production are multidisciplinary endeavours that benefit from experimentation and the application of innovative techniques and approaches borrowed from science and art. In GAME LAB, students will be introduced to a selection of non-traditional techniques that artists have been using to create games: camera-assisted 3D sculpting, DIY motion capture experiments, visual scripting,the integration of real world captures into computer generated worlds, and more. The instructor will introduce the students to these tools to rapidly prototype experimental ideas and to integrate these techniques into their projects. GAME STUDIO provides students with a set of materials, tools, libraries, frameworks, engines, interfaces, and instruments to create games, both analog and digital. Among the digital tools that will be explored are Processing (a great tool for learning the fundamentals of programming, free and open source) and Unity 3D, the most popular engine for game making. This course also involves a ‘rapid prototyping’ phase, wherein developers work feverishly to implement a large number of small ideas to test their potential before embarking on the more rigid and costly processes involved in full production. Several famous games in history began with a minimalistic prototype created in less than a week. is an intensive course which aims to build up a student’s repertoire of fast-prototyping skills and provide the student with invaluable experience in starting and finishing games. Each prototype will be confined within a conceptual theme and/or within unique technical constraints. Beyond simply learning to program, students in this class will explore models and algorithms useful for developing games. Students acquire practical skills by building gameplay experiences through a series of short-cycle exercises. GAME BUSINESS provides students seeking to get a job in the video game industry with a basic understanding of its economic components and drivers, so that they may better understand their role within it, whether as an employee of a larger company, a partner in an independent studio, an individual developer, or a freelance contractor. The goal of the class is to provide the practical knowledge and conceptual understanding students need to achieve the greatest degree of success and creative freedom throughout their career. The course also address issues related to marketing, networking, and promotion. The creation of novel storytelling strategies for digital games is one of the key issues in game development. Narrative games build bridges between dramatic writing for theatre and film, television, and game design, and opens new avenues for new types of writing for digital media. GAME WRITING is a hands-on course that focuses on games that include a strong storytelling component, providing the opportunity to do interdisciplinary work. Master Governing the Large Metropolis Programme objectives The Master's programme Governing the Large Metropolis aims to prepare graduates for work on public policy issues in a variety of large metropolises beyond Europe, in relation to different types of organizations and agencies. The world cities and urban sprawl of both the global North and the global South face massive public policy and governance challenges. The scale and speed of urbanization raise a plethora of issues, which are all covered in the programme. These include: economic development, poverty and slums, housing, health, technological and social innovation, the management of risk, infrastructure, water and waste disposal, changing labour markets, sustainable development, democratic participation. Governing populations divided and organized by class, income, religion, ethnic origin, mobility and/or gender has become even more difficult in a globalizing world where opportunities for mobility, participation in overlapping networks, interdependence and the scale of large urban regions make classic territorial conceptions of government and public policies partly obsolete. Students receive rigorous methodological training, experience from international professionals and exposure to high level academic content. The programme is taught entirely in English with a great emphasis on issues of comparative study. No ready made recipes are provided, and no simple fairy stories on the so called "best practices of good governance": the programme trains the students with a strong critical approach and management skills so as to be competent for project accounting and decision making to implement urban policy in critical environments. Systematic relations are built with urban professionals and research groups, including cities such as Bogotà, Lima, Mexico, Rio, Sao Paulo, Lagos, Beijing, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Istanbul, Cairo, New Delhi, Shanghai, Tokyo and Johannesburg. Going beyond geography, development studies and physical planning, the Master's programme aims at training young professionals who will take charge of public policy design and implementation in the governance of large cities in the future. Main orientations and specific features The two-year programme comprises a mix of sound interdisciplinary theoretical courses, case studies, methods and professional training: Theoretical training focuses on public policy, sociology, governance, law, economics, demography, risk and globalization, centering on issues such as housing, migration, food security, utilities, climate change, informal economy, local finance, conflict management, transports, cultural policies, and the digital city; Professional training is provided in the first year through a group project (capstone) commissioned by a private or public organization, which involves doing applied research in the urban field. Students work 1.5 days a week for six months with a professional tutor. Now on board with offered internships: Automobili Lamborghini, Bridgestone, Danisi Engineering, Pagani Automobili, VI-grade, ZF, TRW The Programme has the aim of training highly qualified professionals with a solid background in the design of vehicle dynamics and capable of operating in all the phases of design and development of the vehicle, from dynamic simulation to testing the prototype and the preproduction vehicle. The Course provides students with special and specific competence in vehicle testing techniques, both virtually, through CAE, and experimentally on the real vehicle (on track and road). See the promotional video of the Programme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TswNmoRgvx0 The training program, as an absolutely innovative element, includes, alongside frontal instruction, test sessions on the circuit of the Quattroruote Safe Driving Centre, during which the participants will be engaged at first hand in learning the techniques and methodologies used in testing, inspection, checks and fine tuning of the vehicle dynamic behavior. All the participants will take a specially designed course in Advanced Driving, oriented to the subsequent phase of testing and inspection on the circuit. The training program of the Course is completed, and this aspect also represents an innovation, by the use of a static simulator for developing vehicles in a virtual environment. The Programme is a full time, international, one-year course equivalent to 1,500 hours and to a total of 60 ECTS points, divided into frontal instruction at the University of Pavia, Palazzo Vistarino, practical exercises at the Quattroruote circuit (Vairano di Vidigulfo, Pavia), an internship period (equivalent to 24 ECTS points) at the main automotive companies, guided tours to facilities related to the course, seminars, study activities and individual preparation.
