The Master’s Programme in Nordic Visual Studies and Art Education (NoVA) educates professionals and researchers, to achieve understanding of the best Nordic practices and traditions in art education and visual communication, and give relevant competencies and pedagogical interaction skills for working in cross-cultural and international educational situations and environments. NoVA builds on Nordic expertise, and is open for international students. Nordic perspectives are related to current discussions in the field of international art education. Studying in another Nordic university/university college for one or two semesters is a requirement of the programme. Students are responsible for the costs of living during their study time. Collaborating universities and departments are: Department of Visual Arts Education at Konstfack, University College of Arts, Craft and Design, Sweden; Department of Art, Design and Drama at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Science, Norway; Department of Art at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Finland; Department of Communication at Aalborg University, Denmark. Education content NoVA courses are mapped around three concepts: sights, sites, cites. Throughout the NoVA programme, students focus on the significance of “sight” in relation to theories, practices, and networks of visual studies. With the concept of ”site,” students investigate the geo-political and pedagogical dimensions of space, place, the public sphere, and private realms. And, students are provided with opportunities to critically reflect upon and synthesize previous experiences and knowledge as well as generate new knowledge through “citational” practices that draw upon existing social and cultural texts, theories, artworks, and research. Career opportunities Students that graduate from NoVA will have strong intercultural understanding and experiences, and knowledge of teaching practices and theories in different Nordic countries. This cross-cultural study offers work opportunities internationally in different art, educational, and visual communicational areas, institutions, organisations, communities, art and culture projects. Visual Culture and Contemporary Art focuses on tutoring students to develop and contextualize their own artistic, curatorial or theoretical work. It is open to artists and practitioners with different backgrounds. The program explores new forms of artistic production and professional agency within the broader field of contemporary art and visual culture. Theory and practice are tightly interwoven, and emphasis is put on developing each student’s artistic, curatorial and theoretical thinking. The program has two majors: Visual Culture and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) and Curating, Managing and Mediating Art (CuMMA). The ViCCA major works through four focus areas: Sites, Senses and Situations; Words and Spaces; Beings and Things, and CuMMA, of which CuMMA is also a separate major. The CuMMA major focuses on the professional skills needed for curating and mediating art. In both majors some of the courses are also available for the students of the other major. Goal of education (Learning outcomes) ViCCA (Visual Culture and Contemporary Art) is a two-year major, which connects the worlds of art and non-art. Criticism, fiction, experimental writing and textual performance are among the methods we use in exploring the margins, boundaries and contexts of artistic work. Beings and Things provides a platform for discussion and investigations into how we might rethink and reshape our connections to the living world – as part of that world. We probe, for example, the intersections of objects, microbes, resonances, human and non-human life forms. We focus on inter-relational and sensorial levels of life and on phenomena that are not necessarily consciously observed or sensed. We might talk about “aesthetics of atmosphere” and “sense-sphere”. Beings and Things trains the students to become facilitators of new modes of creative/artistic practice ranging from building to breathing, from fermentation to fragmentation. Curating, Managing and Mediating Art, CuMMA, provides a structure for reflection and acting, learning and organizing in art institutions and the public sphere. Are you passionate about discovering and widening the scope of sound design in the digital era? Welcome to study Sound in New Media Major Subject. The education is project-oriented, joining practice with theory. It combines art, design and media driven aspects of sound, covering a wide range of disciplines from concept design to live performance and from storytelling to programming. Teaching is fully in English, and students can write their Master's thesis in Finnish, Swedish or English. Learning Outcomes The general learning objectives of Sound in New Media are the following core competences, which the students will develop during their studies: project management skills, design skills, transdisciplinary and teamwork skills, musical competence and creative use of software The studies at Media Lab emphasise interdisciplinary and collaborative work, while individual skills are studied in workshops and through tutored studio work according to a personal study plan. You will also learn the theory related to sound design and music culture. Musicae / Master of Music.The course structure has a constant focus on the Rhythmic Choir Direction and Rhythmic Choir Methods subjects. The main subject area of the degree course also includes Theory and Method of Musicology on the first semester. In addition, a series of skill-oriented subjects such as Ear Training, Piano, and Singing are taught. All of these contribute to the broad qualifications that a choir director must possess. Master of Music Rhythmic Music Teacher

 

At the Academy, master’s students follow a 2-year university program in an artistic and research-based study environment. Master’s students compared to bachelor’s students develop their knowledge, skills and competences that make them able to initiate and execute music projects and educational training independently. The master’s education allows students to fulfil highly professional roles in the labour market. Additionally, this master’s degree program provides a foundation for further studies at Soloist study program.

 

 

Content and opportunities

 

The MMUS Rhythmic Music Teacher degree course at The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, is a 2-year course during which students build upon the knowledge, skills, and qualifications as rhythmic musicians and teachers acquired during the BMus degree course. Taking their musicianship as a starting point, students immerse themselves in two or three supplementary main subjects in addition to the main instrument. Main Instrument Pedagogics may constitute one of these main subjects. The main subjects must correspond to at least 6 semesters of tuition, are selected from the main subject catalogue (q.v.), and incorporate a communicative aspect as well as a pedagogical course. Electives may also be added.The degree course forms the basis for student choices in relation to their future careers as musicians and teachers. The Master of Global Music (GLOMAS) is a new, innovative and specialized graduate degree programme offered in collaboration between higher education institutions in three Nordic nations. Students will primarily be affiliated with one of the three Glomus founding partner institutions in Denmark, Sweden, or Finland but will also participate in joint courses held at each institution, for which travel and lodging expenses will normally be covered. In most cases, the Master degree programme will take 2 years to complete. In addition to coursework, all students will also conduct fieldwork on a foreign or minority musical culture. Students will be offered opportunities for fieldwork via partner institutions in the Southern hemisphere, particularly Africa and the Middle East.The programme emphasizes development of “bimusical” performance skills, typically within at least two traditions from different parts of the world, as well as studies of topics relevant to the career of a professional musician, including such areas as musical leadership and instructional skills, project management, and applied research. The Nordic Master in Jazz (NOMAZZ) is a joint initiative between the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.The programme leads to the Master of Music Degree (MMus) according to each institution’s specific regulations. When a student is accepted to the programme, he/she will become a student of one of these four institutions, which will be his/her "home institution", and where he/she will also graduate from eventually. The basic structure of the studies will, however, be the same for all the students in the programme and is designed and managed in co-operation with all institutions involved.The programme’s common language is English.You will receive tuition from some of the best known musicians of the Nordic jazz scene. However, the course has no pre-conceived stylistic conventions, and the students on the course have wide-ranging tastes in music, meaning you can focus on your own personal expression.Most importantly, Nomazz is intended for musicians who have reached a high level of performance ability.
