Africa is one of the most important sites of international development interventions, and historically one of the sites where much of the academic discipline of development studies was forged. This program draws on the expertise of the University’s Department of African Studies and Anthropology (DASA) and International Development Department (IDD) to provide an in-depth exploration of the relationship between development studies and Africa.

The Master in Advanced European and International Studies - Applied European Policy and Governance Studies is a one-year programme which is taught in two languages (English and French), with a trilingual option in German. The Master takes place in Nice-Canterbury-Berlin. Learn about European integration, international relations, EU policies and economics, participate in professional skills workshops and career coachings, improve your linguistic skills and acquire the competences to become a Policy Officer in international organisations. A special feature of this programme is the applied component at the crossroads of theory and practice.

Our Politics and Economics of the Middle East MA explores the intersection of politics and economics in one of the most vital and interesting regions in the world. You will develop solid regional expertise in addition to the theoretical and methodological skills necessary for a career in political and economic analysis.

The Vikings have been incredibly influential in world history and culture. The Institute for Northern Studies' team will be using their recognized expertise in this area to create this unique and exciting course on offer to students all over the world and to re-evaluate the Vikings; past, present, and future.

The Department offers the widest coverage in Europe of research and teaching related to the languages and cultures of the principal countries of South East Asia. Its primary commitment is to the four languages Burmese, Indonesian/Malay, Thai and Vietnamese, and their pieces of literature, cinemas and associated cultures. REF 2014 submissions by members of the Department included significant and paradigm-shifting monographs, edited collections, journal articles and book chapters in cinema and gender, literary criticism, cultural history and postcolonial studies.

This course offers a structured study of 19th- and 20th-century European philosophy, closely interpreting and analysing foundational texts. Four taught modules are followed by a dissertation on a topic of your choice.

The Double Master’s in Policies & Governance in Europe (PAGE) will provide you with an in-depth understanding of major political and economic developments in Europe and of the analytical approaches developed to account for them. You will study at two of the most highly ranked universities in Europe in the field of politics and international studies: Luiss, which has currently firmly established itself among the top 25 institutions in this field, and King’s College London, 13th in the world and 5th in Europe in the 2023 QS Elsevier Subject Ranking. 

SOAS has an international reputation for excellence in the field of South Asian studies earned by the world-leading research undertaken. REF 2014 submissions by members of the Department included significant and paradigm-shifting monographs, edited collections, journal articles and book chapters on literature, cinema cultural history and postcolonial studies.

All students register in year 1 of the programme as MPhil students. The upgrade from MPhil to PhD takes place at the end of the first academic session for full-time students (or at the end of the second academic session for part-time students). All new MPhil/PhD students are provided with a supervisory committee of three members, comprising a main or primary supervisor, and a second and third supervisor. The split in time commitment across the supervisory committee is 60:25:15. In the first year, students are expected to meet their main supervisor on a bi-weekly basis for a period of at least one hour.

The MPhil in African Studies offers a taught course with a substantial research component and provides an excellent foundation for students wanting to develop their knowledge of Africa.

Domestically, its politics are driven by competition between its parties and contentious debates across a whole range of policy areas. As the players in Washington DC and the statehouses struggle for power and the media reflect an increasingly coarse and strident form of politics, the American public has become more frustrated.

The taught MSc in American History offers you the chance to study American History in the hemispheric sense, taking ‘America’ to mean the whole hemisphere of the Americas. You will study at an advanced level through taught courses and independent research. You will have the opportunity to take a comparative or transnational approach to the history of the Americas, as well as to study some countries and regions in more depth. The programme provides advanced knowledge and understanding of selected topics in American history and will enhance your skills in independent research, critical analysis, and both oral and written presentation.
