Audience The program is designed for candidates with a first-level degree in urban planning and/or architecture, as well as those who have a first-level degree in economics, humanities, social sciences, communication, or other related disciplines. Outcome During this degree program, students will: Learn how to apply appropriate research and design methodologies to urban and architectural design projects Design projects from start to finish, using a systematic sequence of steps relating to form, structure, technology, and aesthetics. Conceive of, propose, and realize a research and design presentation at a professional level, selecting the best communication strategy and languages for a multicultural audience. Program In the Master in Urban Vision & Architectural Design program, you’ll learn to envision transformations of urban spaces. You’ll have a chance to propose innovative solutions to problems in the fields of contemporary architecture, landscape design, and urban planning. And you’ll come to understand the changing role of architects and urban designers in different contexts. The program is workshop-based, supported by seminars, lectures, tutorials, and fieldwork. Industry professionals, the course leader, and project leaders support students through individual coaching and project mentorship. The Master in Urban Vision & Architectural Design program has a unique structure among Domus Academy programs: It begins with two courses, followed by four workshops. It continues with the internship and concludes with a final master’s project. Courses In the courses, you will study critical research methods, design theory, strategic thinking, and historical and contemporary design practices—all within the broader context of urban and architectural design studies. You will then explore a broad range of methods, tools, and topics that define contemporary urban and architectural projects, examining the relationships between design practices and the cultures and contexts they serve. Workshops Guided by industry professionals and faculty project leaders, you will work in cooperation with leading companies on projects from concept to design, from micro to macro. You will also analyze your projects from an economic, marketing, social, and anthropological point of view. Some possible workshop challenges include the following: Develop a strategic vision for solving a specific urban issue, moving from a specific intervention to applications within a wider framework. Investigate the relationships between architecture and urban planning and related fields of study, such as product design, interaction design, and communication design. Experiment with cross-disciplinary languages, techniques, and modalities. Design parts of open spaces that are part of a natural or extra-urban context or that are placed in urban gaps. Critically evaluate the landscape elements that need to be maintained, re-designed, or regenerated; formulate a project proposal that considers spatial complexity, social and cultural implications, and environmental and energetic issues. Develop a proposal for an architectural intervention, taking into consideration the elements that make up the urban space around architecture, including physical, cultural, economic, and social factors. Final Project Working under the guidance of industry professionals if they choose, students must research and write a final report on a topic of their choice, optionally illustrated with 3D models. Students explore the role of their own work within the larger context of the field, apply the theories and methods they learned during their course of studies, and demonstrate their level of technical skill. Students present their final project to company representatives. Internship There is no better way for you to gain experience in your field than actually working in it. The internship is a chance for you to work onsite for a company or design studio in your field of interest—while applying all the strategies you learned in the classroom and in workshops. Alternatively, you can complete an intensive project in collaboration with a company on the Domus Academy campus. Either way, you’ll get an inside perspective on how your industry really works, and you can make important connections that will further your career. You complete your internship before your final project. 100% of our students participate in the internship, including non-EU students, who can extend their visas for up to one year to complete this portion of their studies. Masters in Urban Design in North America 2017. The Master of Architecture is a 110 credit 3 year first-professional degree program that aims to prepare future architects to provide leadership and vision in the construction of the physical environment, and to collaboratively draw upon and organize diverse professions and multiple technologies to expand the field of architectural design. Research is an integral part of the M.Arch course of study, from first-year courses in design, theory, history, media, and technology, to the final semester’s directed research project. The program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and currently ranked #8 in the country by Design Intelligence. Our faculty members are recognized for their level of commitment to each student’s progress as well as their professional achievements. The faculty is comprised of published scholars, award-winning designers, funded researchers, and active professionals. Curriculum Studios in design and media, lecture courses and seminars in theory and history, and courses in structures and technology during the first three semesters of the M.Arch curriculum constitute the “core” of the program. The final four semesters, including a summer intensive term, offer distinct experiences. In the fourth semester, all students have the option to select from a range of studios taught by distinguished visiting professors. Students who have been awarded with advanced standing based on architectural study at the undergraduate level have the option of studying abroad at the University’s centers in Florence and London or at the University’s Fisher Center in New York City. In the summer of the second year, students can study at a summer intensive program in New York City or in one of our “Three Cities” global study programs. The design focus of the third year includes both our Integrative Studio, designed to synthesize knowledge garnered across the curriculum in a highly detailed building design, and a faculty directed research project defined and developed by the student in tandem with faculty advisors. A rich array of professional and history electives allows students to study specific topics in seminars and lecture courses. DIRECTED RESEARCH At Syracuse Architecture, the completion of a directed research project is required for award of the M.Arch degree. Students’ capstone experience in the M.Arch. degree embraces the complex multi-disciplinary nature of architectural projects in the 21st century by providing a framework for students to explore individual research + design interests around a series of topics supported by faculty expertise from across the university. Led by School of Architecture faculty, small groups of students working in these shared topic areas are given the opportunity to advance their work in the kinds of multi-disciplinary contexts and conversations that drive innovative practice today. Through the Directed Research experience, we seek to prepare students to seek, initiate, and lead these conversations upon graduation. Masters in Urban Design in North America 2017. The Master of Urban Design (MUD) degree program is an applied research and design degree for students who complete a bachelor's degree in architecture, planning, landscape, or another related disciplines. A broad and inclusive admissions policy is used to attract a cross-disciplinary group of students pursuing professional and academic opportunities as well as mid-career enhancement, and to meet a growing demand for expertise in urban design in the global urban society. The program is designed to fit the needs of both full-time and part-time students. The MUD program aims to engage the complex issues faced by contemporary towns and cities, which are being transformed by shifting demographics, global capital, information technology, and environmental sustainability. The MUD program is built on the premise that urban design is a fusion of physical design, policy and implementation strategies. It mediates the professional disciplines of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, development, and engineering that together shape our urban environment. Thus it constructs collaborations between these specialists and the citizens affected by urban development and redevelopment. The MUD program takes the Charlotte metropolitan region as a laboratory while simultaneously reexamining issues on the national and global scales through an integrated summer travel-design experience abroad. The program is housed in the University’s Center City Building in uptown Charlotte, which is also home to the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and the School of Architecture’s own City Building Lab, which provides an important contact for students to engage in funded research projects with the faculty and organizations beyond the campus. Students entering the MUD program with a professional degree in architecture can earn IDP credits towards architectural licensure. Curriculum The MUD program requires 36-credits, which can be completed in twelve months (fall-spring-summer) by full time students. Each of the three semesters includes 6-hours of studio and two 3-hour seminar courses. Applicants with no previous design training are required to enroll in an extra 3-credit hour summer Basics course prior to fall enrollment. To accommodate part-time students, courses can be taken in independent 3 and 6-hr increments, but full-time attendance is required for the final summer semester, including the 5-week travel immersion experience. International Study Experience The MUD program includes an integrated 5-week summer international travel-design immersion experience. In recent years, students have traveled to multiple cities in China to study high-density urbanism, historic regeneration, and new town movements. During the summers of 2015 through 2017, students will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to study hyper-density, verticality, infrastructure, and sustainability in urban design - all issues critical to the revitalization and expansion of urban centers. Dual Degree Options For full-time students with a four-year undergraduate degree in architecture, the MUD program also offers dual degrees with the two-year Master of Architecture (MII-track) professional program at UNC Charlotte. This dual degree can normally be completed in three academic years. Opportunities also exist for additional dual degree options with other UNC Charlotte graduate programs in Geography (Community Planning) and in Business Administration (Real Estate). Students enrolled in the three-year Master of Architecture (MI-track) program may also add the MUD degree to their architecture degree at the end of their program with a separate application submitted during the last year of their architecture studies. The enrollment period for these two degrees comprises 4 calendar years with two summer sessions. Students enrolled in the 5th year of the BArch program at UNC Charlotte may also enroll in the 12-month MUD Program through an expedited application process in the spring semester of their fifth year. This allows students to obtain a professional architecture qualification and a post-professional urban design qualification within a two calendar year period. BArch students must take the GRE exam during the spring semester as an application requirement. The separate portfolio submission may be waived. [-]
