Established in 1984 at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, the Hammons School of Architecture is an accredited five-year professional degree program which offers a Master of Architecture degree. The required architecture courses are integrated with the liberal arts curriculum of the university. The objective of this integrated curriculum approach is preparation for professional architectural practice within the broadest possible educational context.

The first two years of the five-year program are considered the pre-professional years. Enrollment in the first year of the pre-professional program is limited based upon high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

During the first two years of this program, coursework includes a liberal arts body of knowledge in collaboration with drawing, design, history and theory, computer graphics and technology. Students who successfully complete these initial studies continue on to the professional program to continue advanced courses in architecture and the Engaging Our World (EOW) curriculum for the concluding three years.... The Conway program is a lively mix of classroom instruction, applied studio work, student and visitor presentations, fieldwork, site visits, and informal discussions in the collective kitchen.

Sketching in the field

Students learn from faculty, from each other, from guests, and from their explorations of their project sites and the communities where those projects are embedded. The environment is personal, collaborative, and rigorous—learning is driven by motivated students working for real communities to solve real and pressing problems.

The Conway program is built around those real projects for real clients. The projects raise issues, questions, and challenges—from technical questions about site engineering, to ethical issues about community involvement or wise use of resources, to practical questions about how resilience can be built into systems in the face of uncertain futures—that drive the classes, discussions, and field and studio work that make up the rest of the fully integrated, multidisciplinary program. Class assignments—graphic, technical, and written—support project work.... [-]

Master of Architecture II

THE MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE II PROGRAM WILL EXPAND TO TWO STUDIOS FOR THE 2013-2014 ACADEMIC YEAR.

In addition to the existing curriculum of Advanced Design Studio work that culminates in a design-research Thesis project, the Criticism, History and Theory concentration will offer an intensive one-year immersion in the criticism, history, and theory of architecture. Emphasis is placed on approaches to architectural analysis and history, the role and contemporary relevance of theory, and the relations between theory and design. Seminars will offer students preparation for careers in journalism, teaching, and eventual doctoral studies, with a broad understanding of the cultural conditions of architectural production and a concentration on excellence in writing. Analysis studios provide a deep insight into the formal and programmatic diversity of historical and contemporary architecture, the process of design, and potential avenues for new approaches towards theory and practice. A required emphasis in Urbanism or Technologies of Representation allows for deeper investigation into specific areas of historical or contemporary architectural theory.... [-]
