A master's degree is a postgraduate academic degree. One must already have an undergraduate degree to apply for a master's program. Most master's degree program would require students to complete a master's thesis or research paper.

Applied physics is the study of the field as it pertains to the development and expansion of practical applications of the discipline related to research, technology and society as a whole. Among the industries that students may focus on include information technology, fiber optic communications, aerospace, mobile phones, satellites, microchips and semiconductors.

Europe is the sixth largest continent and includes 47 countries and assorted dependencies, islands and territories. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south, Asia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the West.

The FUSION-EP master programme has been selected in the list of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) funded by the European Union. From the academic year starting in Sept. 2021, fifteen scholarships (including the participation fees and a monthly allowance) are awarded to the applicants with the highest profile. Among these scholarships, about twelve are awarded to applicants from Partner Countries. The FUSION-EP programme, created in 2006, aims at training the next generations of magnetic confinement fusion physicists and engineers. Since the academic year 2019/2020, FUSION-EP shifted the coordination from the University of Gent to Aix-Marseille University in order to put forward new objectives. The FUSION-EP programme is organized in two periods of increasing specialization in two different countries until the 3rd semester's distinct track possibilities: Fusion Sciences and Fusion Technology.
