In Groningen, we offer the MA in Classics & Ancient Civilizations: Ancient History as a one-year Master's track -in English- with a full-time and a part-time tangent. While we cover the whole of antiquity, from archaic Greece to the late Roman Empire, our focus lies on the political, cultural, and religious connectivities of the Mediterranean world.

The MA in Classics & Ancient Civilizations offers a broad approach to Antiquity, with the integration of classical languages and ancient cultural history. Our faculty have strong expertise in a wide range of subjects, they provide excellent teaching: in fact, two of the staff members were elected Lecturer of the Year. We are a master with an internationally orientated research climate, and a relatively small and friendly community, that is part of a vibrant university city with many international students.

The master Classics and Ancient Civilizations consists of two tracks:

This MA track studies the existence and coexistence of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Exploring the impact of religious diversity on social identity formation in the Graeco-Roman and late antique periods until the rise of Islam, it analyses the role of tolerance and acceptance, of rejection and exclusion in their mutual relationships during the last two millennia.

Ancient History in Groningen is interdisciplinary in character and interacts with religious studies, material culture studies, but also with other historical periods. In Groningen you will become familiar with various theoretical approaches and methodologies, and digital humanities plays a strong role in our teaching and research. Our topics range from elite culture to daily life using a wide variety of data – besides literary sources, you will explore ways that inscriptions, papyri and material culture cast a radically different light on the ancient world.

The MA in Religion and Pluralism, Ancient & Modern was chosen as the best MA program in Theology and Religious Studies in the Netherlands. It offers an integrated approach of religious pluralism, politics, and their many global interfaces, with a focus on the historical context of modern societies. Our program is taught by internationally recognized experts in the field, with expertise in various religions. You are going to study at a non-denominational university, and receive the opportunity to pursue your own research interests.

History at Winchester concentrates on different geographical scales of history, including local and global perspectives. It gives you the opportunity to engage with a range of approaches to the study of history, examining a range of historical subjects from ancient history to the present.

Our Research Master’s programme in Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies focuses on interdisciplinary study of the material, social, and intellectual developments in Europe (including the Mediterranean region) from Antiquity through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

The MA in History with Certificate in Applied History is designed both to give students a grounding in American history and historical research at the graduate level and to introduce them to ideas and techniques useful in the applied history of the built environment.

The master of music education in music (MME), traditional program, is designed to prepare students for increasing responsibilities in the field of music teaching. Applicants for this degree plan must hold initial teacher certification (Alabama Class B or its equivalent). Class A teacher certification is granted by the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) upon meeting the Alabama Quality Teaching Standards (AQTS).

This postgraduate degree provides an exciting and challenging forum for you to explore the archaeology and history of the Classical Mediterranean world. You will study and interpret evidence from the Mediterranean to gain a deeper understanding of the societies and economies that shaped classical antiquity.

Students in the M.A. in History program may choose either the 3-term (1 year) cognate option or the 6- term (2-year) thesis option.
