The Master Degree in Automation Engineering is a two-year program fully delivered in English. The Degree provides students advanced competencies in many important fields of Automation, such as robust control, system theory, software for real-time control, vision systems, mechanical systems, a design of advanced automatic machines, diagnostic systems.
Within this Master Degree Program students have 2 possibilities:
- Master Degree in Automation Engineering for 2 years in Bologna;
- Double-Degree Master Program with Tongji University (AlmaTong Program). For these students, classes of the first year will be held in Bologna. Then, students will attend classes in Shanghai for a period of 3 semesters. Upon completion of their studies, including a final graduation project, they will obtain two Master degrees:
- “Laurea Magistrale in Automation Engineering / Ingegneria dell’automazione” from the University of Bologna;
- “Msc in Control Theory and Control Engineering” from Tongji University.
The specific learning outcomes of the 2nd cycle degree programme in Automation Engineering aim to produce professional figures with a solid basic and specific background able to cover management, design and coordination roles in companies requiring knowledge of sizing and implementation of highly complex architectures, automatic and robotic systems, automation processes and plants which integrate computer components, measuring, transmission and actuation equipment. Therefore, they will have an in-depth knowledge of the specific subjects of this class, with particular attention to the fields of advanced design, innovation and development of production, planning and programming, management and organisation of complex systems. It follows that graduate automation engineers possess in-depth interdisciplinary knowledge of the automation, mechanical, computing, electronics and electrotechnical sectors. Graduates will possess the following skills:
- Inclination for advanced design, integrating mechanical, electric, computing and control aspects, for particularly complex automation systems and with high levels of innovation;
- Organisational skills even in complex industrial systems;
- In-depth knowledge of the automation sector.
The computing facilities and laboratories available to students, and which are constantly being enhanced, provide the setting for students to practically apply the knowledge, working autonomously and in groups. Internships will also be available through the collaboration with many local companies with which the university has signed cooperation agreements.
Moreover, students may obtain a dual degree: the 2nd cycle degree in Automation Engineering from the University of Bologna and an MSc in Control Theory and Control Engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, China. This opportunity allows students to gain extensive experience abroad (also in the industrial field, with compulsory internships) and acquire considerable transversal and interpersonal skills.
Professional figure: the Automation Engineer
The Automation Engineering graduate has an in-depth interdisciplinary knowledge of the automatic, mechanical, computing, electronics and electrical engineering sectors, and is able to conceive, design, implement and startup automation systems for machines, processes, systems, products and services. Lab and experimental activities complement the theoretical competencies provided in the two years.
This flexibility both in the attitude and in the competences is believed to be a significant asset of the Automation Engineer, in view of the large variety of possible applications, of the continuous and rapid evolution of the technologies, as well of the job market.
Due to its international background, the Master Programme allows students to work for local international companies and abroad. The main career opportunities lie in the manufacturing, industrial transformation and services industries, both conventional (transport, distribution and territorial management, etc.) and advanced with high added value (management consulting, automatic machines, computing, etc.) and the civil service. In these fields, Automation Engineering graduates are able to contribute with their specific skills to technological innovation and production processes, which also require the integration of information and industrial technologies.
More specifically, graduate students will find employment in companies that produce and/or use automation components and systems, engineering firms, public or private bodies which use automatic/mechanical/ computing techniques and technologies to optimise production, manage and/or supply services.
