About

The UCM Faculty of Fine Arts launched the 2013/14 Master's Degree in Art Education in Social and Cultural Institutions with a teaching load of 60 ECTS credits.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) held in Lisbon in 2006 the World Conference on Arts Education: Building Creative Capacities for the 21st Century. At this meeting specialists from all countries in the field of arts education laid the foundations and the path that arts education should develop in the following ten years. This tour was organized in the document the Road Map for Arts Education. In this document, in addition to referring to culture and its access to it as a human right, it establishes that the vehicle for this is the development of artistic education. Arts education stimulates cognitive development and can make students acquire and develop the knowledge and experiences most relevant to the needs of the societies in which they live.

UNESCO, in its guidelines, actively encourages governments and other agencies to facilitate collaboration between ministries, departments, cultural institutions, NGOs and arts professionals and recognizes the importance of developing an arts education policy that articulates the links between communities, educational and social institutions and the world of work.

In recent years, graduates in Fine Arts, have started professional work applying arts education in non-formal contexts: museum and art center education departments, foundations, NGOs, social and cultural associations, developing art and arts education programs in senior centers, with children and adolescents with high capacities, etc. All these contexts are demanding professionals in the area of artistic education and plastic creation. The basic experience of all of them has to be transferred to bottom-up strategies and the university must be one of those responsible for generating these bottom-up strategies, which allow through artistic education programs to open new aesthetic channels.
