The programme is designed for qualified teachers with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the various fields of education. It aims at integrating the most essential research in curriculum studies, educational psychology, inclusive education, and pedagogical leadership to provide tools for the development of school education.

The instructional focus of the programme is on school community efficacy and on enhancing students’ abilities to develop a modern theoretical approach for their teaching and for student learning. The studies aim at educating teachers who are able to think analytically and critically, solve problems, and work as teacher-researchers.

The programme leans on implementing international, up-to-date research in education and related fields. It is intended to benefit teachers from primary to higher education levels.

Study objectives

After you have completed the Master’s Degree Programme in Teacher Education, you will have the competencies to:

  • understand the preconditions of learning and education and the significance of the teaching profession for societal development
  • develop new ways of teaching and learning in your school on the basis of contemporary research
  • make ethically justifiable choices, present well-grounded argumentations, and defend educational values
  • engage in research in the field of educational sciences

Study contents

The programme consists of versatile core studies in inclusive education, curriculum studies, evaluation of teaching, learning and education, and in leadership in educational organisations.

In addition, the students are offered thorough studies on quantitative and qualitative research methods and practices. They also have the possibility to include optional studies from other fields of science into their degree.

The programme highlights include first-hand experience of Finnish school with classroom observation, and high-quality thesis supervision by professionals with expertise in research, teacher training and teaching in school.

The intensive collaboration between the School of Education and the Teacher Training School of the University of Tampere provides our students with an indispensable knowledge of the integration of theory and practice in education.

Eligibility criteria to the Master's Degree Programme in Teacher Education consist of two parts: the University of Tampere general eligibility criteria and the programme-specific eligibility criteria. The programme-specific criteria specify and/or supplement the general criteria. Applicants must meet both in order to be considered eligible.

General eligibility

To be eligible to apply for a Master's programme at UTA, an applicant must have

  1. a completed university level Bachelor's degree or equivalent in the field of the desired programme or in a closely related subject
  2. AND
  3. fluency in English sufficiently advanced for academic studies.

Programme-specific eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply to the Master’s Degree Programme in Teacher Education, an applicant must have:

  • a Bachelor's or higher university degree from a university or a university of applied sciences (no specific field required), AND
  • a formal teaching qualification (certified teacher) in the country where the Bachelor’s degree certificate was issued.

Applicants must send an official certificate or a description of the content of their formal teaching qualification, and provide a link to a website where this information can be verified (university, ministry, etc.).

The Bachelor's degree or equivalent must be completed by the time the programme begins. If the degree is not completed by the end of the application period, an applicant can be accepted to the programme on the condition that s/he sends an officially authenticated copy of the degree certificate to the University by 31 July 2018 (to be confirmed). If the certificate is not issued in English, Finnish or Swedish, an officially confirmed, complete and precise translation into one of these languages must be included. The degree certificate must reach the University by the deadline. A successful applicant will, in this case, first receive a notification on conditional acceptance and later an official letter of acceptance once the degree certificate has reached the University.
