Creating the new digital world

Computers and software are an integral part of our daily lives. The interaction between people and computers takes different forms as computers are integrated into different systems from mobile devices to clouds.

The trend is towards more and more complex systems that are connected in various ways to form large distributed systems. As the systems and their component services are constantly evolving, understanding the complexity and system integration is crucial, which means that there is a need for skilled software specialists in the field.

Applicants should hold a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, software engineering, or mathematics.

Study objectives

Upon completion of this degree programme, students will have an in-depth understanding of software engineering and the ability to design and implement software systems. They will also have the knowledge and skills to manage and improve software development processes and understand, design, and implement web and cloud-based systems.

Study contents

Software Engineering – Web & Cloud studies focus on software engineering but contain programming technologies, especially the ones related to the web and cloud-based services. As a student, you will be provided with a solid understanding of software engineering, the ability to design and implement large software systems, and the competence to manage and improve software development processes. Studies also include relevant technologies and skills like networking, clouds, information security, user experience, big data and IoT.

The research activities of Tampere University ensure that the content of the degree programmes remains at a high level academically. Our close collaboration with companies allows us to keep the content relevant also for careers outside academia.

We offer our students the opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. A rich variety of minor studies and supplementary courses are available as well as the opportunity to concentrate purely on major studies. In fact, each degree is a unique combination of studies that the individual student has found most interesting.

Structure of studies

The programme is comprised of 120 ECTS. Courses are worth 90 ECTS and the remaining 30 ECTS are awarded for successfully completing a master's thesis. Each ECTS is equal to an average workload of 27 hours, including lectures, exercises, assignments, independent study and an examination. The duration of the programme is two years. Students spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the final project (master's thesis). They start their studies in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.

Career opportunities

There is a lack of software professionals in Finland and abroad, and almost 90% of students pursuing software-related majors at Tampere University are employed on the day they graduate. A typical career in a company starts with working as a programmer and then advancing towards expert and/or managerial positions. Our MSc graduates also find employment in commercial and administrative tasks relating to the field, without excluding abilities to work as a researcher or teacher. Following the successful completion of the programme, our graduates will be eligible to apply for admission to doctoral programmes in Finland or abroad.
